  • Career In Politics?

Hey I was wondering what other Members would think of making a job in politics.

It's something that intrigues me and it's one of the few careers that really interest me (Family Is Strongly against me joining the military) So Politics which I enjoy debating discussing and looking up seems like a suitable choice. (Almost think I should put this in the politics Forum )

So Would It be feasible IE - worth getting into it and how one would go about joining the bigger stage. I Have a Fairly Moderate Voice in politics that perfectly suits the Canadian Style. Strong Government Regulations and then at a ground level let all Canadians choose their own lives.

It's something i have thought a bit about and would like input from fellow members.

    Cheers!

      Not a chance for me.

I'm sure that it's not the same everywhere, but here, I'd have to say that I value my soul too much. :P

Become a street sweeper or pick up the trash. Both are much more respectful jobs.

What's this about your family not wanting......... Who's life is it? Yours, not thiers.

It would be nice to say that we need honest people in politics so it is a great idea. The problem is that I don't think it is possible to get anywhere in politics unless the honest corrupt themselves. So as much as we need some good, honest politicians, I believe these are incompatible objectives. Even on the local level.

You should watch the last 3 seasons of the Wire or the film the Candidate to get an idea of what I mean.

Join a political party and become active/engaged as a volunteer. See what you think and what opportunities you can find from there.

I deal with them all the time and they are double talking, slimy pigs that are only interested in being re-elected and how much swill they can gobble until they are not.

I'd rather be a prostitute as at least the public knows I'm going to screw them out of their money.

Politics shouldn't be a 'career', it should be a temporary service. That's the biggest problem we have with our leaders now. They only know politics.

I too have contemplated running for political office. If I did, I would let voters know that i would only be doing what I thought would benefit ME and if any body else gained any thing from voting for me then that would be a bonus.
In fact, I would use Trailbosse's description (above) as my campaign slogan.....and as a politician i would not give any credit to any body else for writing it....
I think it would be interesting to see just how many votes you would poll if you stated that you were only running to see how many job related perks you could get, (Subsidised or free travel, accomodation, secretarial staff, the ever popular overseas " fact finding " trips etc)

The interesting thing about politics is that there is no school for it, at least as far as I know. Somehow, all politicians seem to have the same playbook, say the same talking points, and know how to coax voters to support them because of this magic formula. We essentially pay them to lie to us, and accept it.

"yes, I will lower your taxes"
                        "yes, we will improve education"
"yes, we will increase your social security/welfare/etc."
"no, this won't cost you a penny more!"

                        I'LL VOTE FOR YOU!!!

Our forefathers died to give us freedom, not free stuff.

Thanks for Much of the Input. I have always wanted to straighten out the mess that is full of liars and slime balls. I always wanted to see how strong Honesty could last and how words although not the brightest, but will ring true compete against the clamor of lies.

I know our former representative Monty Solberg was a good politician (atleast compared to the mass of them) He Fought and rejected and left his party for a while when his party leader when Stockwell Day was caught in a scandal involving child pornography. He Seemed to be able to be one who took charge and when his final election came (2006 he had 80% of his ridings votes) He then retired in 2008. To me he seemed to be one of the more honest politicians and in this time you couldn't ask for anything more.

I'm Taking another Look at the military however I think That Running in politics could be a good thing for the nation or simply a ruining of my peace of mind.

Assuming I have your riding right, and you'd be running for the Conservative party, you're chances would seem to be pretty good. If you're running as anything else in that region, I'd say your chances are pretty bad

I'd say the biggest question would be: why do you want the job? Do you want to be the big man who gets to make big decisions, or do you genuinely want to fight for the interests of your riding?

I think the biggest problem with politicians, especially in Canada, is arrogance. Too many politicians think that their smarter or better than their constituents. Remember that your job should be about SERVING rather than LEADING. Democracy isn't about us setting you up as a little king; it's about you representing us to the entire nation.
