  • Grognard?

To Dr. S's dismay I must use this French term that and I quote:
"A grizzled combat veteran/campaigner who always bitches." aka "a person who is constantly interested in warfare or plays computer and board wargames excessively."

Well ask a french canadian like me and I'll give you a bit of an explanation of that word.

Grognard means someone who, for the lack of a better word, bitches about everything and anything. So what does grognard have to do with war? Goes back to Napoleon and his Old Guard. The tough veterans of his Grande Armée were called Grognard because they...... bitched!!! Hence a grognard today is synonymous to veteran. :thumb:

Makes sense, bitching and the military go together.

I did. "What?!!" is the proper response to any statement in Frenchie-talk.
