Back in its day the F-5/ F-20 were considered one of the most economical planes to produce and maintain. My dad flew them in Vietnam.

How truly "modern" is it? Both China and Pakistan consider the J-7 (uprated MiG-21) "modern".

Well, hey, Soviets had Vacuum tubes in some of their planes, just so EMP wouldn't mess them up.

Oh, was that deliberate then? I always thought this was just because the Soviets just didn't have the capacity to churn out as much electronic equipment as the west.

For countries who can't afford the new Mirage or F-16 blocks, this aircraft will be a good alternative.

Believe it or not. Spain used the Fw-190 till the lae 1950s and also employed the tiger VIe well into the mid 60s.

Churn out? Are you kidding? It was because the Soviets and Chinese didn't steal that part of the plans...

My dad was on several teams that tore apart Soviet fighter planes that defectors brought over. This is absolutely true.

One rule of thumb in the military and defense community is that Soviets and Japanese do NOT invent things because they cultures do not reward innovation and creativity.. They steal and refine things. Only the American educated people from these countries are starting to change this.

Innovation and creativity are unique characteristics of American culture.

By the way who would want to buy a Mirage? Their realiabilty sucks. The snotty French can't build $hit without socialist subsidies. The best example of this is Airbus... a company that was created by collective Euro nations to compete with Boeing.

Can I get clarification on this thread? What do you define as cheap? Low cost and reliable or chessy and crappy? I took the original question to mean economical and reliable.

By the way, China and Czechoslavakia only stopped flying Mig 19's about 10 years ago.Sweden was flying Glosser Meteors and De Havilland Vampires up until 10 years ago.

The reason that I know this is because the Planes of Fame Museum in Southern Cal bought several of these aircraft. Most of them came over with fully armed with guns and missles. The US Customs crapped in their shorts when they arrived and made the museum strip the planes down before getting them through customs. How is that for useless trrivia?
