Chirac gives lost D-Day veteran a lift

LONDON (Reuters) - French President Jacques Chirac gave a D-Day veteran a lift back to Paris in one of his jets after the New Zealander got lost following Sunday's ceremonies in northern France to honour World War Two Allied troops.

Keith Coleman hopped on a coach after the main international ceremony in Arromanches to mark the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, but instead of taking him back to the French capital he ended up at a remote military airfield where all the other veterans got on a plane.

"There was this important looking guy wearing gold braid who I told my story to and I guess he must have felt sorry for me, because he made a few phone calls and told me he thought he could get me back to Paris," Coleman, who speaks no French, told the Guardian on Tuesday.

The 86-year-old former gunner with the Royal Air Force was whisked by car to another airfield where two jets were waiting. A cavalcade pulled up and the French president got out.

"He came over ... I snapped to attention and gave him a little salute ... he put his arm round me," he told the paper.

"He said he would be happy for me to travel in one of the aeroplanes and gave instructions that I was to be driven to the door of my hotel."

Well if we're on the subject, I have watched several news casts, documentaries over the last week about D-Day. In all of them, I saw the French people show outmost respect and gratitude to the Americans, British and Canadian Forces veterans. :thumb:

You know, the French get a lot of crap in here, so when they get one right, they deserve the press.

Thanks for more good news on the French Danny. We can return to abusing them later.

You know Jeff, we, I included, like to pick on France for our own reasons. I had my "experiences" with the French military and hierarchy in Kosovo and they were...... well not that pleasant although at the foot soldier level, most were excellent and I made some good acquaintances. But as you climbed in the echelon.....

Another thing about WW2 and the French, is that alot still fought on after the Armistice with Germany in the form of Free French troops, maquis and Resistance. Alot lost their lives working for the Resistance and helped during the Normandy campaign. ANd another side note, when their fleet was attacked by the British at Mers El Kebir (sp?) it probably took some of the morale out of the Resistance and Free French troops but they fought on. And after viewing this week, I am pretty convinced that the French people, probably moer so to the North then let's say Paris, are very appreciative of our Countries liberation. What is going on???????? I'm catching myself defending the......... no it can't be????? I'm defending the French????????

You need to lie down, take some of the yellow pills I sent everybody and it will all be OK again in the morning.

I've personally taken 5 of the yellow pills. I wasn't able to fault the French hosting of the D-Day commemorations one bit, and I'm usually hyper-critical, so I'm obviously ill as well.

I agree 100% with you Janos. The French did, for at least a few days, seem to be our old friends again. And now I can't make fun of them, for a while at least. Can have some of those yellow pills, Dr. S?

Maybe Pres Chirac is reading this forum and is petrified that you will unleash your army onto his lands.
