  • Happy May Day Everyone!

Here is a little parade to celebrate.

And here's the now "traditional" anti-capitalism riot...

Imagine a ball of iron, the size of the sun. And once a year a tiny sparrow brushes its surface with the tip of its wing. And when that ball of iron, the size of the sun, is worn away to nothing, your punishment will barely have begun.

yeah, I rather put May Day and Labor Day at the same level - at the bottom. When I was back in Detroit, a friend of mine always asked if I would march in the Labor Day parade with him. I told him it was against my beliefs to be a part of any socialist activities. Don't know why he never got the message.

ah yes. The good old days. I've nothing against Russians but there are times I miss having a well defined enemy.

                          1 May:

Feast of St Joseph the Worker.

                          Pagan Feast of Beltaine

                          Secular May Day

So the first of May can be celebrated in different ways and meanings depending upon a person or society's set of beliefs.

It's origins as a holiday ( Holy Day ) go back to ancient times and was used to mark the end of Winter and the beginning of Summer. Fires were relit and the occasion was used as a fertility rite to show the Sun and the Earth coming together.

It was probably the time of the most births both for humans and animals.

A day of rest and hope after the long dark months of Winter.

Then the holyday was built into the Christian calendar as a universal feast.

In modern times the Communist States took it for their own and celebrated it in big style.

I think May Day was a bit frowned upon in the West later on because of that.

But now we can all celebrate May Day as a holiday for all working people and their families regardless of our personal beliefs.

A very special May Day it was too as the European Union expanded to some 450 million citizens.

Surely all folks who work for a living can celebrate May Day without having hangups about it?

I though 'mayday' was the universal call for help? It's not? What the heck were communists making so much noise for every May 1st then for?
If voting could really change things, it would be illegal.

Ah, time to reel out the classic Red Dwarf jokes...

Rimmer (trying to work the radio):"Mayday, Mayday" he pauses to turn to Lister, "Wonder why they call it Mayday?"

                              Lister:"Eh?"

Rimmer:"The distress call, wonder why they call it Mayday? It's only a Bank Holiday. Why not Shrove Tuesday or Ascension Sunday?"

Turns back to radio:"Ascension Sunday, Ascension Sunday" pauses to think once more, "The fifteenth Wednesday after Pentacost, The Fifteenth Wednesday after Pentacost..."

Lister:"It's French you doik! Mai'dez! Help me! M-AI-DEZ"

                              Rimmer:"Is that right?"
