  • "Combat" on Encore Action

After a head's up from Doggie in the Best War Movie thread I have begun to watch the old TV show "Combat".
Its on Monday-Friday on Encore Action at 12:00pm (and for you night owls it repeats at 3:00am) and best of all its shown uncut and commercial free.
Some episodes are better than others, but its still better than 90% of today crop of TV swill.

I loved that show as a kid. I recall the Germans were sometimes painted as buffoons, but otherwise the stories were pretty good.

They may have been portrayed as buffoons, but at least they used some good actors to do the portraying. (ie, Richard Basehart, James Whitmore & tomorrows guest, Leonard Nimoy)

That was a great TV show when I was a boy. COMBAT was on one day a week and that was the only day I was allowed to stay out after dinner -- I could go to my best friend's house to watch COMBAT with him, or he could watch it with me. Usually, the 3rd kid our age in our town would also come by and watch it with us (it was a small town).

BTW, I have been told that although the Germans spoke German, most of it was unrelated to show -- it would be about laundry or girlfriends or other subjects. If a Geman-speaking person on his list happens to catch the show, I'd appreciate knowing if that's true or not (they don't show it in Germany where I live, for obvious reasons).

I didn't know any german when I originally saw the series in the 60's but eight years living in Germany has changed that.

The actors speak German but sometimes it's very bad German, with the accents on the wrong syllables and such. Some times they slip up, like "holen sie das machinen gun".

The actors are mostly just mouthing phonetics from the dialouge coach, and don't actually speak German, though some do.

A lot of times they're talking about girls or something, that's when you have a scene where Germans are just hanging out being Germans and they have to say something.

When they show Germans laying wire or something, they're always griping about "Verrdammt arbeit." Never "sheiss arbeit."

I saw a movie called Hanover Street on Encore right after Combat came on at 12, and I noticed a bunch of German in a street scene saying exactly the same thing as the Germans in a Combat episode did, even the same voice. I guess they save the dialog tapes for use in other films.

Having recently seen a few episodes its amazing how many high profile actors found their way as quest stars on this show. As a kid watching it in its first run I just knew I liked it. Now I can see how well done it truly was. Its too bad little of todays TV programs have this quality of acting (or writing).
