  • New gaming lap top.

I bought a new laptop last night and its a Asus Tuf Gaming rig and its smoking fast. The set up was easy and it only cost a grand. Best Buy hooked me up and I told the sales man I wanted to get a rig to play Outer Worlds and to select the make it easy button. Anyway I'm really pleased with the ease of set-up and the outrageous speed of it.

I got an ASUS "gaming laptop" (not branded gaming, but specswise, yeah) last year for around 800 dollars. It can't run Outer Worlds, or most modern games on max settings, but can run most games just fine on lower setting. And strategy games work like a dream. I've been thinking of getting a desktop to make the most out of my money, but if I can get a gaming laptop with a grand that runs outer worlds....might have to rethink.

doesn't gaming destroy pcs? In the past it has, which is why I separate work and gaming PCs. Haven't played any games in 5+ years though.

How do you guys deal with the overheating issue? I use an additional fan but even that isn't enough. The PC's components will still degrade at a steady pace, particularly in the summer.

Depends heavily on what sort of game you want to play, and how.

Solo or with family, online, casual gaming or modding, tactical, strategy or shooter with need for fast precision controls etc.

For casual gaming I'd certainly consider a console with large TV screen, in price and ease of use they're hard to beat and most major games are designed for those specs anyway these days.

For tactical and strategy games, you'd want something smaller and portable, can probably save money in the graphics department but may still want good processing power etc...

Eh, way back when the internet was still young and I had time to play hardware to breaking point, I've been known to simply take the thing apart and spread the components out in front of open windows to cool them down in summer -

          I wouldn't advise *that* though

And ? How do you like it ?

Hadn't heard of it, been reading the Obsidian forum a bit, but reactions are mixed, as they usually are on dedicated boards....

It's like when you play a batman game, and you look at the map and ask yourself "brainstorm time, how am I gonna enter this buidling, there are so many different options" and then you realize, you will enter it the same way you did for 99% of the places you visit, through a ventilation conduct. In all 3 games.

I mean, it's not a game site but service like Steam. How you gonna play Outer Worlds anyways, since it's only available through this service (?)? Personally, I am happy with the two free games you can download every week. Not that I have even played them, but maybe one day.

When I went shopping at Best Buy for a gaming laptop, they had nothing in stock that had the specs that I was looking for. Either the SSD was way too small, ram was inadequate, or the GPU was of a lower model. I ended up ordering one with a 512G SSD, 32G ram, the second laptop drive, and a GTX 1070. The MSI laptop I ordered came with a SD card reader, 6 USB 3.0 ports, and a blue ray rom, stuff that most gaming laptops don't have as standard.

I'm not a gamer. Just curious to know if gaming is inferior in a Mac.

I am looking for a new computer down the road to play games on. So Laptops can't handle Steam? That would explain why my Laptop started overheating and eventually crashed! I am still using my old Dell 2400 to play my old games. It would not download Steam, so I guess that is a blessing.

Desktops are always the way to go, unless you require the portability/convenience of a laptop. (Better hardware for less money, typically).

And that said, there are certainly some amazing laptops out there, but they are more susceptible to heat issues, etc. They are also not as easy (or outright impossible) to upgrade.

I always advise people to go with a desktop if they don't have a clear preference or need.

I can help you piece something together down the road if you'd like!

I appreciate the offer. Right now I have gone past assessing a need and am looking for a way to pay for it! I will let you know when I can afford one...
