  • The Five Best War Movies Ever

My local Sunday paper gets the USA Weekend insert, and it's not a bad read. I noticed a sidebar yesterday with the above headline, and their picks for the best (in no particular order) are:

    Paths of Glory (1957)
    Patton (1970)
    Glory (1989)
    Braveheart (1995)
    Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Now I know this topic has been beat to death in the historian's circles, but since this is a new place for us, let's get to know each other a bit better, eh? Your thoughts?

    Here's my top 5

    1. Saving Private Ryan
    2. Full Metal Jacket
    3. Braveheart
    4. Patton
    5. Hamburger Hill

now if you count Band of Brothers as a war movie instead of a miniseries i would place BOB at #2 and FMJ would drop to 3, Braveheart to 4, etc.
Hell was full, so I came back.

Actually the weird thing is I don't consider Saving Private Ryan a war movie. It seems to me to be a weak "love story" set between some GREAT SFX.

                I loved Band of Brothers.

                  3. Saving Private Ryan
                  4. Sands of Iwo Jima
                  5. Pork Chop Hill

If you call Band of Brothers a movie then it would kick Sands of Iwo Jima off the list. Had to give the wife an extra big kiss for giving me the Band of Brothers DVD set for Christmas.

I loved BoB, but I never got to see it all teh way through. I missed one the the shows about half way through, and refused to watch the rest until I could see them all in proper sequence.

Come And See (a Russian movie about Partisan and SS Polizei).
                        Band of Brothers.
                        Path of Glory.
                        Apocalypse Now.
                        Full Metal Jacket.

And if Master and Commander can be considered as a war movie, it is one of the best in my opinion.

Just got Path of Glory from the library...as I had never heard of it until this thread. Seems to crop up a few times...so it must be worth checking out!

Might try to find Come and See...as I have heard about that elsewhere.

Path of Glory is the translation of the French title of the Kubrik's movie.
And concerning Come and See there were a thread about war movie on WarfareHQ where some people spoke about him, in 2002 or something like that.
