  • Felix or Oscar?

Remember The Odd Couple -- the show about mismatched roommates? Felix was fastidious, while Oscar was slovenly.

So, where do you fit on that spectrum? Are you more like Felix, or more like Oscar?

Hmmm...I always start as Felix and slide into Oscar. I have to make a correction periodically. I marked myself as balanced, but that's over time, not all at once.

Balanced. A real neat freak on some things, others things not so much. I can't stand dirty dishes in the sink however I'll let dust get 6 inches thick before I even think about dusting.

I'm a bit of both. I'm obsessive compulsive and like things organized and somewhat neat but I'm not a sharp dresser. I dress in truck driver chic: flannel, blue jeans and t shirts.
If you can't set a good example, be a glaring warning.

Freightshaker: you are unique in many ways -- all of them good that I can tell -- but I have a question for you as a trucker: which is neater, your truck or your house? Or is it a tie?

Same here on my dress code. I guess we were grunge before it was called grunge. I'll add Ohio State and Army sweatshirts to my attire during the cooler months but that's about it.

I had to admit I'm more like Felix -- but I'm not a lot like him. My wife is my "roommate," though, and if you visited our house, you'd soon see that I'm the Felix and she's the Oscar. She thinks nothing of leaving dirty dishes and articles of clothing wherever they happen to fall; I'm always picking up after her. I end up doing the dishes, laundry, and most of the tidying up. Years ago, I met her ex-husband, and he said anyone married to her needs to hire a maid. As it turns out, I've sorta become a maid.

Back to Oscar and Felix: I've always hated sports, which was Oscar's passion. If we had a poker night, I'd be more concerned with preparing sandwiches and snacks, and I'd be secretly upset with the players' sloppiness. I also have allergies and am careful about what I eat and drink.

OTOH, I don't like to dress to the nines. But I'll wear dress shirts and slacks to work, and I polish my shoes every once in a while. No ties, though; they're uncomfortable, and I don't see any point in the affectation. (I wore jeans to work and everywhere well into my thirties. Sometime in my forties, I decided they were only appropriate for weekends.)

I could tell I was more like Felix when I was sitting around with my wife and a couple friends playing a Monopoly-like game (Merchant of Venus, actually). I had my play money neatly arranged, and I was shocked to see hers thrown into an untidy pile. I wanted to reach over and sort it out for her.

Playing chess, I'm the kind of guy who'd resort to the j'adoube rule (where you say, "J'adoube" -- "I adjust" -- as you move your improperly positioned opponent's piece into the center of its square). It really bothers me to see things out of place.

I'm a mixture - I'm a pack rat and have alot of junk that is just important to me, but I keep it very neat. I also have alot of quirks about
how I like things to be 'a certain way' to feel comfortable. Such as clean
cat-litter box, beds made up, floor semi-clean, pinecones and branches always picked up in yard, trash cans not overflowing, not a snappy dresser either...
so probably more of a Felix with a bit of Oscar thrown in.

I'm Oscar in every way but dress clothes...

Albert Einstein has been quoted as saying, "If a cluttered desk signs a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?"

About 20 years ago, the Chief Geologist of my first employer gave me a copy of that Einstein quote with picture of a cluttered desk. I was famous throughout the company for two things: A sharp mind and a pig-sty of an office. Back in my bachelor days my apartment and then house were even messier. Even today, after being promoted to VP and given a big, corner office, I've still managed to fill it with piles of maps, cross-sections, well logs and tons of other paper.

I love to drink and eat unhealthy foods and I even have a NY Mets ballcap.

The only way that I'm like Felix, is that when I need to dress up - I dress very well. Although, if given a choice, I'd wear hiking clothes or Hawaiian shirts and shorts everywhere. I guess I'm also Felix-like in that I like to go to things like symphony concerts, ballets and art museums.

Definitely my truck. Living in an 8' X 8' space can get messy in a hurry so I try to keep things put away. Usually I have time on the weekends to vacuum and such. The outside gets washed frequently in the summer but rarely, if at all, during the winter.

I have a ton of crap, too, but it all lives in my library and office in the basement so my wife doesn't need to see it.

Thanks...my ex-brother-in-law is a trucker but I suspect he's the other way around

Have you seen Ice Road Truckers on TV? Any desire to drive up there? Seems ridiculous to me...I have no desire to even see that kind of weather.

House can get a bit like Oscar, the garage and "fishing room" lean much more toward Felix.
