  • Book Review: Why Do People Hate America?

Since this isn't a military book I stuck it here.

When I saw one of the authors had a name like Ziauddin Sardar and noticed both were heavily into Islamic studies, I thought "here we go, another CAIR type passive aggressive rant on everything that is wrong with America". Then I thought "now that is cynical, surely these guys are writing a how-to guide on winning the hearts and minds of hostile cultures, just because these guys have worked for places like the BBC doesn't mean they are anti-American".

I should have trusted my gut instinct over my PC indoctrination. Sure enough, a 211 page essay on how everything the US does is wrong and that's why people hate America. They even manage to blame western movies on American hatred.

Some of their silliest arguments include the exportation of fast food. Apparently it is not hypocrisy to buy a big mac with one hand and shake your fist at America for selling it to you with the other. This guy even goes into an oratory on how the hamburger symbolizes everything that is wrong with America. It is too lengthy and ludicrous to post but if you find this book at your library it's on page 103. Read it, it's funny.

Somehow, these guys even managed to blame westerns. Now I can see how a movie like The Quick and the Dead could cause anti-American sentiment, or at least anti- Leo DiCaprio sentiment. But these guys went after the movie Shane. They talk about how Shane eptiomizes violent solutions and "dealing death to those who oppose the future course of America". Funny considering Shane was one of the least violent westerns, he actually fired less than six shots in the WHOLE movie, making it the first western to not feature the "62 shot revolver". But these guys talk about how our westerns epitomize violent solutions in the name of civlization advancement and how this terrifies the rest of the world (because everyone but the US are a bunch of peace loving flower children, right? Because no one but the US has solved a problem using violence.) They go so far as to say that Shane was purposely symbolic of manifest destiny. These guys have too much free time.

Another beef they had, next to the exportation of American burgers, was the exportation of American culture. Hey, at least our cultural exports don't have suicide vests. They complain about how sub-Saharan africans wonder why we have so much luxury and won't help them out. Talk to your local warlords pals, our huge donations tend to disappear somewhere between them and you.

This book is comically absurd so it will be an entertaining read. On that note I reccomend it.

Why do people hate America? Jealousy and laziness. The productive citizens of the world are too busy improving their countries and feeding their families to shake their fists at America. Only ne'er-do-wells wanting someone to blame point their fingers. The rest work for a living.
A new life awaits you in the off world colonies; the chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure!

I don't think that many "L/L/D" were lead much by this book:

Man, I always love the complaints of American corporations invading other countries.

It also reminds me of another point I've seen argued many places - McDonald's (or Burger King or Wendy's) does more to win (and prevent) wars than actual military power.
“To discriminate against a thoroughly upright citizen because he belongs to some particular church, or because, like Abraham Lincoln, he has not avowed his allegiance to any church, is an outrage against that liberty of conscience which is one of the foundations of American life.”

i'm going to dive into this thread and going to get alot of hate. your realations with other countries from since Independance day until about 10-30 years ago caused majour hate towards you by culture. you caused even canada to nearly plummet into a war-zone until Sir. John A started the tithe wall. The stuff about movies I do find absurd unless its about the indian vs cowboy crap which so many modern day people hate.(outside of the US) the NAtive americans were treated worse than dirt to you olden day americans. example- The americans gave the sioux (Lakota) the black hills. you find gold in the hills you claim the hills away from them and get results like the Red Cloud war. and you wouldn't believe about all the stuff Crowfoot of the Black foot americans was got told of the tyranny you caused from Sitting Bull. You used war to claim lots of what is present day USA from mexico (spanish). You even wanted to claim of what was Hudson Bay company now Alberta and Saskatchewan. In lots of cases you solved problems by using war instead of word.

"They complain about how sub-Saharan africans wonder why we have so much luxury and won't help them out. Talk to your local warlords pals, our huge donations tend to disappear somewhere between them and you."

there is alot more you can do than what you actrually do. And as for the warlord comment that just sickened me.

                  tithe wall
Tithe wall? I'm ignorant of this term.
Then there was the War of 1812, a bunch of hullabulloo because the Brits couldn't recruit enough sailors.

How about the Barbary Coast Wars? We cut down on the price of shipping, stomping out those pirates.

Before WW1, what nation didn't use force to get what they wanted?
Franco-Prussian War was about grabbing Alsace-Lorraine from the French.
7 Years War was Prussia expanding her territory.
War of Spanish Succession was all about preventing the French from taking Spain.

"They complain about how sub-Saharan Africans wonder why we have so much luxury and won't help them out. Talk to your local warlords pals, our huge donations tend to disappear somewhere between them and you."
                  It's true in some cases.
                  Somalia for example.

We could pay the Africans all the money in the world, but it probably wouldn't help. More likely hurt the economy. Why grow crops when the UN gives you food?

Zimbabwe. President has forced all the white farmers off the land, and dropped city-slickers in the middle of the farms. He then tells them to farm. Then the trucks drive off, and the people are alone, without the skills to survive.
I wouldn't want to support that President.
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's easier to blame your problems on other people then fix it yourself. After the Cold War, democracies don't have to fear the U.S.S.R., so they don't need the U.S. assistance.
                  Overall
For despite the silly sayings about violence never settling anything, history IS changed on the battlefield: ask the National Socialist German Workers' Party.

Guess what every country has said when we wanted to pull all of our troops out after the wall came down? NOOOOOOOOO!

Don't blame the US for continuing to have a presence in other democratic countries...blame the people and their leaders of those countries.

The US has done more good for this world than any other single country. Sometimes you have to break a few eggs to bake a cake. So be it.

                      Think of the alternative...
