    Saw a documentary on the History Channel which renewed my interest in this gigantic Soviet booster, the "Soviet Saturn V" that was meant to carry the L3 spacecraft combo to the moon.

    Unfortunately, the N-1 failed in all 4 tests because the 30 (!) powerful main liftoff engines proved too difficult to control, even despite the assistance of early Soviet computer software. The Russians did not have a designer comparable to Werner von Braun.

    Note the tiny workers gathered round the base of the N-1 in the picture below. Gives you on idea of the size of the monstrous booster.
