  • Euros getting fat too

    USA Today
Every day, rain or shine, Luisa Bornia and her family gather from all corners of this ancient hilltop town for pranzo, the traditional midday Italian meal. Over homemade pasta, vegetables and wine, they hash out the latest issues, then leisurely chat while peeling apples and peaches for dessert.

Not for them McDonald's, potato chips, packaged food or da portare via- takeout.

"TV dinner? No way. We don't even own a microwave," says Bornia's lanky 19-year-old daughter Elisa.

But if the ages-old Mediterranean diet is still the staple in Bornia's household, it is clearly disappearing from plates elsewhere in Italy. Long-touted for its health benefits by doctors the world over, the classic regimen of fresh fish, fruits and vegetables, pasta and olive oil is losing out to American-style eating habits. The result: rapidly increasing levels of American-style obesity.

"American fashions always arrive here 10 years later, and now this fashion is arriving," says Amleto D'Amicis, a leading government nutritionist who helped write the latest report on obesity in Italy. Among the findings: 25% of Italian children are now overweight or obese making them the heaviest in Europe.

Of children ages 6 through 10, 36% are overweight, the Italian Ministry of Health reported last month.

And it's not just here. Throughout Europe, the scales are bouncing upward. In many countries, more than half of adults are now overweight and up to 30% obese.

In Britain, 21% of men and nearly 24% of women are now considered obese, a three-fold increase in 20 years, according to the International Obesity Task Force, a London-based consumer group that collaborates with the World Health Organization (news - web sites). This month, the task force warned that without urgent action, obesity levels in Britain will soar 40% or more within a single generation. A 2001 study showed over 11% of adults in Finland were obese.

People are forgetting how to eat, a lot of them anyway. Many don't even know how to cook their own food. They must either buy their food already made or use a microwave. A diet of preprocessed food isn't going to cut it.

Any type of hard manual labor job pretty much cures obesity. Too many folks sit around in front of computers.

Homo Sapiens was genetically engineered to be hunter or a farmer that spends most of the day standing up and tiling the land or chasing game.

Remove him from his natural habitat and lock him up in the city and problems are inevitable.

Yeah that's all good and well but more jobs in the future are going to be of the type that don't require much manual labor. Junk food and city living don't work well with the human animal.

Sorry I just want to correct one big mistake.
genetically engineered to be hunter or a farmer

No No, 1st member of Genus Homo were not Hunter neither Carnivore/MeatEater, more vegetarian and latter carrion eater, then with brain development they were abble to develop tool to permit them to hunt. Look at our body we have neither claws nor big teeths.
We have no specific adaptative character for hunting, only Brain did the difference

due to circumstances they change of feeding mode. No Genome action here just evolutive adaptation. Homo Sapiens sapiens is more a hunter fruit roots collector -> hunter/collector.

THE TRUE CHANGE IN FEEDING IS DISCOVER OF FIRE

Farming is a cultural adaptation nothing to do with DNA management of organs. Our feeding adaptivity permit us to live with farming.
Our food "tool" stomach intestine lever etc....permit us to adapt to various foods, nothing direct with Genome.
DNA buid "tool" it is up to us to use them differently.

Cultural evolution took pace here over biological evolution. It would be my conclusion here

They should bring back after school programs like what Germany had in WWII barring the political message which will start to encourage kids to keep in shape at a young age which would hopefully transcend into their adult years through sport or other activites instead of just relying on school in gym which is a joke when the fat kids (those most in need of exercise) get to stand around and do nothing.

In fact the true explanation is that people don't make love enough.
Or a German invasion, that would force the French to run.

Actually it works really great with the human animal. Expected lifetime is on the rise and has long since exeeded the 30 years it takes to bring its offspring to childbearing age. Anything that happens after that has no bearing on evolution.

Well it isn't junk food that is really causing the rise in the life span. It's more like things such as better hygiene (no more s#!t in the street), advanced medical practices, central heating & air conditioning, and less back breaking manual labor. A diet of only junk food will likely get you a heart attack by 40 even with all the other things being in your favor.

I agree that it is not junk food that is causing the rise in lifespan. But the factors you point out are predominantly available in modern western cities, and as such, city life cannot be held accountable for our health problems (which are many). That was my main point. In Denmark where I am a doctor, caloric consumption has been falling steadily since WW2 but obesity is on the rise. Interestingly enough we have not been able to see a differnce betweem urban and rural obesity.
