  • Discussion - So you speak German, do you ?

Do all Germans speak German ? Well that depends on what you mean by German. Many Germans speak their own dialects which aren't always mutually intelligible.

Speakers in the two other countries in Europe that are known for speaking German aren't necessarily going to be understood either.

If you don't speak German then you probably wouldn't notice the difference.

Here's a couple of samples of Austrian German

A sample of Swiss German speakers - the first speaker is a German.

A video with samples of different German dialects' ways of saying "Hello"

    Tell me about it.

I first studied German at school ('O,' Grade), then in my final year at University, where I did fairly well.

My first couple of trips were to Hanover, where the accent I'd picked up from my tutor (an Englishman married to a Hanoverian) and my low priority ( there were several other German speakers in the party, including three dedicated interpreters) meant that I was able to acquit myself fairly well on the rare occasions I was called upon.

Subsequently, I was the only German speaker on two trips to Bavaria, where my Scottish/Hanoverian accent and their Bavarian dialect made life very interesting.
    Indyref2 - still, "Yes."

I learned some nasty phrases from a certain German band, but I've forgotten most of them.

Italian is the same. I daresay a few other languages too.

It comes down to which dialect was in ascent when the language was standardised.

                            True.

Anyway the easiest way to say that you don't know any German is ich weiss kein Deutsch. German uses capitalisation to indicate the subject of the sentence.

The German word bürger means citizen. So you could say ich bin ein bürger
