  • Who Is Modern Christmas For ?

By modern Christmas I mean the secular rather than religious. Gift exchanging and feasting have taken over from the original meaning. Some people think it is only for children.

    For children and grand parnets

You are correct though in saying the reason to celebrate Christmas has been lost, imo. Consume, consume, consume is now the all important part.

Children and the older folks I'd say. I enjoy it personally, don't get me wrong. But it definitely is more unanimously accepted by those two age groups I think.

Parents love christmas too. It's for everyone and grinches don't have to join in.

To celebrate the returning of the light, the longest night has passed and a new spring is expected -

It is said the christmaslights and trees date back to this also, originally being large bonfires of pines (the only indigenous trees that remained green in winter).

Feasting is the original reason. Commercialism is the new one.

No, No. That is a myth! The large bonfire of pines myth all started when aunt Lucille couldn't wait to get a christmas tree. Uncle Charles told her that if she got the tree too early, then by the time they took it down, it would be dry kindling, fire-superhazard right there in the living room reaching up to the ceiling. Well, ol' aunt Lucille wasn't going to be phased by such arguments. She grabbed da truck and went out and bought a tree anyways...den after Christmas, one short in the lights later, the whole thing burned, lighting up the whole house.

And that's how the whole myth started.

For everyone. The trouble is, we're still apes wondering where the sun went - the reassurance it'll come back is something we still need.

You forgot to include the "everyone that wants it" option.

Never a bad excuse to be nice to people, decorate, and drink eggnog!
