  • The English language : how well do you know it ?

I'm interested to know how well users on this forum know English. In using the word I refer to all the varieties of the language : in responding to the poll you might like to add which version of the language you know.

For the record I was raised on British English and continued with it until I was about 19. My main influence in the nearly forty years since then has been Australian but I did read many American magazines. I've also made a point of studying other types of English including New Zealand and South African. I've been an internet user for about fourteen years which has also increased my knowledge of different types of English.

I went with good. Having said that the last time my cousin came up from Ingerland she brought a friend. Said friend didn't understand a single word that was spoken to her once she got north of Gretna. So good may be subjective

I said beginner because after multiple concussions and associated memory issues; I have to learn stuff all over again. Stupid stuff; I can recall easily, but stuff I need to now...different story.

Still make common spelling mistakes - socialization/socialisation, wonderfull vs wonderful etc.

In speaking I often find myself unknowingly using quotes from movies and songs etc -

Not so long ago I found myself telling a girl that: "Frankly my dear, I didn't give a damn.."

Yeah, yinz know I know all about English n'at! Or should I say, y'all talk funny, 'cept'n me, bless y'alls hearts!

I was a very good student of both grammar and literature. I could teach at the high school level if called on to do so.

Since my retirement the need to be as precise with the language as when I was teaching has gone the way of the dodo. I do not see that as a bad thing.

I went with good ,well good enough to get by in it anyway!! Being Scottsh, sometimes communicating with fellow 'English' speakers is difficult, as sometimes our accent gets in the way, somtimes it's the speed we speak at!

I have 'helped teach' my son when he was at primary school, but wouldn't want to make a career out of it....anyway, if I tried I'm sure they'd soon find out I failed my higher English over quarter of a century ago!!!

Most of my career has been spent teaching English as a foreign language, which is a different specialty than if I had been teaching native speakers in higher education.

My specialty, which I have developed over the years, has been in presenting English in a clear and easily digestible format, without the complex terminology and unnecessary obfuscation used by linguistics professors and other academics.

Those guys would probably look down on me from their ivory towers. However, I have spent nearly 40 years at the 'coal face' in seven countries and am able to see English from the point of view of someone who has to learn it as a second language.

What used to..... annoy me greatly shall we say, was that they tried to force French down my throat when I only just managed a pass in English. One at a time please!

And anyway, German is a much easier language for Glaswegians to pronounce (apart from the annoying habit Germans have of actually pronouncing the "t"s in words. That's just perverse). Apologies to out Gallic chums but I always felt like a right plum trying to speak with a French accent.
