  • Sobieski vs. Manstein (Round 4)

Here are some basic facts for each player to help you in your voting (From Wikipedia):

    Jan Sobieski

Jan III Sobieski (17 August 1629 - 17 June 1696; English: John III Sobieski ), one of the most notable monarchs of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, was the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1674 until his death. Sobieski's 22-year-reign was marked by a period of the Commonwealth's stabilisation, much needed after the turmoil of the Deluge and Chmielnicki's Uprising. Popular among his subjects, he was also a brilliant military commander, most famous for his victory over the Turks in the 1683 Battle of Vienna. For his victories over the Ottoman Empire, he was dubbed by the Turks the "Lion of Lehistan."

    Manstein

Erich von Manstein (November 24, 1887–June 10, 1973) served the German military as a lifelong professional soldier. He became one of the most prominent commanders of Nazi Germany's armed forces (Wehrmacht). During World War II he attained the rank of Field Marshal (Generalfeldmarschall).

He was the initiator and one of the planners of the Ardennes-offensive alternative in the invasion of France in 1940. He received acclaim from the Nazi-German leadership for the victorious battles of Perekop Isthmus, Kerch, Sevastopol and Kharkov. He commanded the failed relief effort at Stalingrad and the Cherkassy pocket evacuation. He was dismissed from service by Adolf Hitler in March 1944, due to his frequent clashes with Hitler over military strategy.

Sobieski for me. I have a hard time voting for Nazi generals no matter how good they were.

I have spent a lot of time in Poland and a lot in Germany

While there is a lot to like about Germany I cannot help but admire the courage, patriotism, and valor of the Polish soldier. I do not believe the Germans were better soldiers or more courageous and motivated soldiers. There were just more of them with more equipment. Much like what the US did to the Germans later.

I truly do believe that people like Sobieski and Pilsudski in their environment were as good as anyone Germany produced.

                    OK - Here's the deal...

I had Jan loosing Guesclin... and Manstein loosing to Mannerheim in the first round... both REALLY bad calls - It seems like who ever I vote for either barely wins by 1 or 2 votes - or gets slaughtered like a pig put in the ground... That being said, I'm going to shut up and vote...

                          No kidding.

Dang, I was hoping that it would be St. Joan of Arc vs. Saladin.
