Until a replacement for Zed is found, or until Honorius returns with noodles, or Falco comes back from banishment. Whichever comes first.

Deer legs are also banned. You have to settle for ducks' feet.

I hear that Cleitus has a new chef named Torvold who has a special dish he prepares using duck. And a new chicken from somewhere to the west.

He calls it Turducken. I hear it's tasty.

That was the Imperial Holiday Supper last week as announced. The dish was turned on to the Emperor by a group of goofy slaves called Christians trying to escape the fate of Franzius' toothless lions in the Colosseum. It took a thousand turduckens to feed the entire palace. That is why there is a surplus of duck feet. The webbing is succulent with a touch of fermented fish.

The fish product most likely to be found in the average Roman kitchen or cookshop was garum, a sauce made from fermented fish and similar to the sauce known as umami or nuac, which is very popular throughout East Asia today. Garum was used to give flavour to stews, soups and many other dishes; it could also be eaten as a relish on bread.
Fish sauce was produced by fermenting whole fish (including the guts and entrails) in large vats for an extended period. The liquid was then drawn off, strained, and “bottled” in amphorae. The resulting product was known generically as garum. Liquamen, (h)allec and muria are other words for fish sauce; the best quality sauce was known as flos gari or simply flos.

And as far duck feet webbings, it is also true. The Ancient Romans would make the modern day Japanese and Chinese look like amateurs when it came to eating strange animals and strange animal parts. Besides for the feet, the duck tongue was considered a delicacy only for Emperors and the extreme rich as it took the tongues from hundreds of ducks to make one serving.

Anyone interested in some Ancient Roman Mice and Rats recipes?

Involuntary vomiting can best be cured by eating slow boiled uterus of young sow flavored only with the best Garum, made only with mackerel intestines. Intestines were best used without cleaning or purging.

Ah.....the involuntary sideface tongue extending problem.........

Classic recommendations during early Empire days was eating a Goatfish that were allowed to slowing die at the supper table. The scales of the goatfish turned to brilliant rainbow colors as the poor piscene slowly suffocated in air. This however fell out of favor as it took so long for the fish to die and the hosts were accused of boring his guests. Luckily, someone came up with the idea to force feed a goose or duck at the table until the bird exploded unto the plates of the diners!

I, Aulus Umbricius Scaurus, Garum wholesaler of Pompeii question the whereabouts of the Herald Torienus, last seen in the presence of Herald's Guild spokesman, Gaius (Jimmus) Hoffasius.
