I have been to the streets with my People. The citizens are impatient, but understanding of the current political and military strife. However..., our city trembles with their rage and only my reputation amongst them has stemmed off a full-blown riot!

They tell me that there is little trust left in our politics, but they have full trust in Caesar!

Let us follow his guidance in this dark hour. The people will wait for a proper outcome, but I warn all of us; if there is corruption in the Senate we must punish it with the most extreme predjudice! We must do this, or the People of Rome will destroy this city one brick at a time until there is nothing left!

I will speak with the People of Rome, and urge them to hold their anger. Let us resolve this matter before madness overcomes them.

        Gaius,

The Emperor is the servant of the people of Rome. By extension, you also serve the People. The rights of the people must be our first concern.

Good Senators and Generals of Rome...,

The People are becoming and angry mob!

I believe that my influence is required to maintain calm in the populous. I will be gone from the Senate, in the streets with the peopole, until the hostile element has been satisified that we in the Emperor's command are loyal to Rome. The citizens are sick of all this squabbling within the Senate, and they fear martial law.

An unruly mob, growing in the city, is molesting suspicious foreigners. They do this fearing a simple Parthian who somehow causes disruption in the Roman Senate.

Legitimate foreign families are being driven from their homes and banned from Rome while their homes are plundered by the mob. Foreigners that resist are being beaten or lynched in the streets.

Things might just get out of hand soon if I don't take action now...

              ~Senator Antonius "Fat Tony" Soprano~

              • 'cediant Toga Armae'

                FLASHBACK:
SENATOR PLINIUS IS ESCORTED BY THE PREATORIANS INTO IMPRISONMENT.
JUST OUTSIDE THE PORCH OF HIS HOUSE HE HALTS AND ADDRESSES THE VIGIL OUTSIDE OF HIS HOUSE IN A SPEECH WHICH WILL GO DOWN INTO HISTORY AS THE 'CEDIANT TOGA ARMAE'.
HIS CAPTORS, IMPRESSED BY THE FORCE OF HIS PERSONALITY, LET HIM.

                "People of Rome,
you are now witnessing the latest act of our blatant violation of Roman Law.
Under no Roman law can a Roman Senator be arrested this way and abducted into prison. I'm not going of my free will and vehemently protest against this course of action. The man whom we chose to be primus inter pares has dropped the mask. Under the pretext of war going on all who opposed him have disappeared into 'Nacht und Nebel'."1)

Peopel of Rome, you will now have to fend for yourself as there is no Senate to protect you from unlimited power hunger. 'Cediant arma togae: The toga's have yielded to arms.' 2)
Do not expect this to be the end. Martial law will follow, all civil liberties will be suspended, more arrests disappearances under the excuse of war will take place. To my fellow Senator Honorius, who was surprised of his arrest and asked 'why me?' I say: 'Et tu Honorie' 'et tu Senatus Populusque Romanum'.3)"

                Roman Senator

                Footnotes:
Plinius shows remarkable patrician cool and fighting pluck of character here in the deep of night.
                1) The reference to 'Nacht und Nebel is a reference to events happening in the distant future, showing the extent of far seeing statesmanship of Plinius. It is possible that the inventors of the term were inspired by Plinius 'CEDIANT TOGA ARMAE' speech.
                2) With 'CEDIANT TOGA ARMAE' , the toga's have ceded to the arms', Plinius parafrases his great example CICERO who said 'Cedant arma togae' let the arms yield to (Senatorial) toga's.

If anyone refuses to release you in such a situation, we can tell then that they have become corrupted by power.

You can become a citizen or any other character from that time period and bring good news, or dire warnings!
Become an ally for Rome or spread lies to cause panic.

For now you can only vote, but opportunities do arise in the game... if the two senators on trial are found guilty then their seats might need to be replaced soon. So join in the game and you may find yourself one day sitting next to the Emperor, fighting for Rome, or against us!
