The recon version rivals the Mosquito in range and is much faster. With in-flight refueling it makes that almost irrelevant.
The Mosquito still out enduranced and ranged the B45-C by over 1,000 miles. By the time they were doing such on active service, the Mosquito was marking time for retirement at the time of those incursions into Russia began. The Camberra about to enter squadrons and the Mosquito retired 8 months after those incursion flights began.

And in the real shooting war world, the Mosquito was still doing the business in spite of Mig.15's.

    • Gotta go with the C-130 when you talk sheer multirole.

While the Mossie was a beautiful machine and had an impact on follow on aircraft, it did not have the versatility and the number of roles the Herc has had/does have.

      Trash Hauler
      Rescue
      Weather Recon
      Artic Delivery
      Aerial Spray Applications
      Covert Insertion
      Satellite Recovery
      Aerial Delivery
      Gun Platform
      Electronic Warfare
      Airborne Command and Control
Tanker (Air and ground refuel capabilities)
Even Bomber (BLU-82 and MOAB delivery)
      Civilian Cargo

And, I'm probably missing a few.

Well, about 7 of those you have listed the Mosquito did too But I suppose that Satellite recovery wasn't one of them, though the Mosquito had quite a few that were unique and some pioneering too. But then again the main versatility of the Mosquito was its ability to do the job despite heavy and very capable defensive capabilities of the enemy. the Hercules can only operate where its safe enough to but if it tried to do what the Mosquito did in comparable enemy skies, for all its versatility, the Hercules wouldn't last five minutes.

              General military transport?
              Paratroop?
(They're the two roles I saw a lot of. )

I also think of the disaster/famine relief (humanitarian) work I've seen on TV news but I guess that's really part of the civilian cargo work you mentioned?
Indeed, civilian cargo and military transport are basically one role really; transport.

"England expects that every man will do his duty!" (English crew members had better get ready for a tough fight against the combined French and Spanish fleets because that's what England expects! However, Scotland, Wales and Ireland appear to expect nothing so the Scottish, Welsh and Irish crew members can relax below decks if they like!)

              • Funny....as I read the thread I have to shut the window due to the annoyingly loud sounds of a C-130 doing touch and goes at the airstrip nearby. Every week, same thing and smells like JP-8 all summer.

                • I believe this bird is done.

                  My worst jump story:
My 13th jump was on the 13th day of the month, aircraft number 013.
As recorded on my DA Form 1307 Individual Jump Log.
