The Lysander, outside of being a marginal army cooperation aircraft really had no other major role in the war and was relegated to being a squadron hack and light transport. It's service in WW 2 was relatively short as it was replaced by less expensive aircraft that could perform the same role.

The FW 189 came about as a requirement for a light reconnaissance and army cooperation aircraft. It earned the title "The flying eye" on the Eastern front for its qualities. Compared to the Lysander it was far and away a better reconnaissance aircraft. The crew's view was far better, and it could carry dedicated cameras for that purpose.
A cannon armed variant for ground attack the A-4 saw very limited service starting in production in late 1942.
A number were refitted with FuG 212 Neptun radar set and fitted with a 20mm MG 151 cannon in a Schräge Musik mounting for use against Russian night intruders like the Po 2.

It was widely used as a light bomber in the army cooperation role too.

By far, it was a more successful and multirole aircraft than the obsolescent Lysander was.

I'll give it to the Lysander, which served in many different capacities, most notably supporting OSS and Jedburgh teams in Occupied Europe. A rugged and reliable aircraft that could do most anything along the battle front.

I went with the Lysander. It was more significant.

Lysander for me. I reckon its numbers and combination of roles trump the 189 by a fair margin.

The Lizzie for being built in greater numbers, Das Auge I fear was really a
better multi role ac and as for the description of the role distinctions differences eg. artillery spotter for the Lysander, do realise that the Fw 189 fulfilled the same role.

Thanks. Artillery spotting confirmed for the Fw 189 and has now been added.

Trainer needs to be added to the Lysander's roles as it was used in various bombing and gunnery schools in Canada, also target tug. Most Canadian built Lysanders being transfered to training. see for example http://www.warplane.com/vintage-airc...?aircraftId=37

The Lizzie had far more influence, particularly its STOL qualities. I'm fairly sure the 189 could not have fulfilled as many different roles as the Lizzie, even given that it was the technological superior, and operationally more effective.

Lysander. It's Westland's only chance at a finalist after all. The "Whirlwind" will probably not even get a 'berth' as a contestant, and I cannot think of any other Westland design that makes the grade.
