Ju 88: Bomber, day fighter, night fighter, attack aircraft, torpedo bomber, dive bomber, transport, long range maritime patrol plane (H model), flying bomb (Mistel), reconnaissance, anti-tank attack (P model).
Further development included turning the basic design into what would have been a very efficient 4 engine bomber as the Ju 488.
As the Ju 388, its performance is on par with the Mosquito.

It easily makes the Ju 88 series one of the most prolific and flexible designs ever produced.

By comparison, the Pe 2 outside being a light bomber never really excelled at any other role. It proved a mediocre heavy fighter and as a night fighter it's numbers never went beyond that for basic further development. It simply doesn't come close to the versatility the Ju 88 series showed.

The Ju 88 is one of THE best aircraft in World War II. It is comparable to the Mosquito.

For my money, the Pe-2 would stand up well against many of the candidates in this contest; but against the Ju-88 I think I'd have to vote for the German aircraft in this match.

I agree, and my vote goes to the Ju-88.

I agree. Both either excelled or held their own in whatever roles they were given.

The Ju 388, yes. The He 219, I agree, no unless you strip all the armor out, limit the guns and ammunition, and have a stiff tail wind...

And, there was never a 4 engine version of the Mosquito...

Yep, the Germans took the wings of a Ju 188 added new center sections, a Ju 388 / Ju 88 fuselage, lengthened it like in the Ju 88H, and slapped the tail assembly off a Ju 288 on the back end to end up with the four engine bomber the Ju 488.
It's one of the first true massive redesigns of an aircraft using existing components and subassemblies into an entirely new airplane.

                          I say again. So what?

It's the Ju.388 that concerns me, not another cut and shut white elephant.

The Pe would score well against other period a/c, alas not against the Ju 88 in a contest of versatility and influence.

What a pity the great PE-2 had to come up against the German "Wunder Waffen"..

something had to i suppose. I would be incredibly obtuse NOT to vote for the best German aircraft of the war...
