  • Rnd 1 Grp G - Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 (Russia) vs Dassault Mirage III (France)

Round 1, Group G: Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 (Soviet Union/Russia) vs Dassault Mirage III (France)

    Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21
The MiG-21 is a supersonic jet fighter aircraft designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau in the Soviet Union. Early versions are considered second-generation jet fighters, while later versions are considered to be third-generation jet fighters. Approximately 60 countries over four continents have flown the MiG-21, and it still serves many nations a half-century after its maiden flight. The fighter made aviation records. At least by name, it is the most-produced supersonic jet aircraft in aviation history and the most-produced combat aircraft since the Korean War. Finally, it has had the longest production run of a combat aircraft (1959 to 1985 over all variants). The MiG-21 was manufactured in China as the J-7 for domestic use and the F-7 for export.

    Dassault Mirage III
Mirage III is a family of single-seat, single-engine, fighter aircraft produced by Dassault Aviation for the French Air Force and widely exported. Prominent operators included Australia, Argentina, South Africa and Israel, as well as a number of nonaligned nations. Though an older design, the second generation fighter is still a fairly maneuverable aircraft and an effective opponent in close range dogfighting. In French service it was armed with air-to-ground ordnance or R.550 Magic air-to-air missiles. The versatility of the design enabled production of trainer, reconnaissance and ground-attack versions as well as the Dassault Mirage 5, Dassault Mirage IIIV and Atlas Cheetah variants. A Mirage III was the first European combat aircraft to exceed a speed of Mach 2 in horizontal flight.

"England expects that every man will do his duty!" (English crew members had better get ready for a tough fight against the combined French and Spanish fleets because that's what England expects! However, Scotland, Wales and Ireland appear to expect nothing so the Scottish, Welsh and Irish crew members can relax below decks if they like!)

This is an interesting match up. The Mirage is a better fighter, of that there is no doubt. Both are lightweight day fighters.

But, the MiG 21 is the symbol of everything USSR and aircraft. It was the plane to beat. Even as marginal as the design really was (the MiG 19 is arguably better and had more potential as the Chinese showed), it became the symbol of Soviet air power for more than a decade. It was the USSR's F-104.

I determined my choice by heads up competition. The Mirage is also a fine aircraft.

Putting sentiment aside, for its influence alone it has to be the MiG.

The Mirage is better, but that's not what this is about. The MiG-21 wins.

The Mirage continued to develop and evolve, while the MiG 21 gave way to more modern designs.

Have to give the nod to the Mirage, this time.

That's good, but are you going to vote?

Mirage III for me, hats of the the Mig for its history but the Mirage is better IMO.

Wasn't the Mirage V a response to the MiG-21's low sticker price?

They were contemparies. The Mirage beat the Mig in the six day war and Yom Kippur
The Mirage gave Israel air superiority without which there wouldn't be an Israel.

The MiG 21 was a pretty mediocre aircraft on the whole. That isn't what makes it significant. It's more like it's the AK 47 of fighter planes.

MiG-21 was the most produced jet fighter in the world, but it's combat record can't match the Mirage, especially in IDF-AF hands! vive la france!!!!!!
