    Fiat CR.42 Falco
    The Fiat CR.42 Falco served primarily in Italy's Regia Aeronautica before and during World War II. It also served in smaller numbers with the air forces of Belgium, Sweden and Hungary. By the time Italy entered World War II on 10 June 1940, about 300 aircraft had been delivered. With more than 1,800 built when production ceased, it was the most widely produced Italian fighter of WW2 as well as being the last of the Fiat biplane fighters to enter front line service as a fighter, representing the epitome of the type. RAF Intelligence praised its exceptional maneuverability, noting also that "the plane was immensely strong", though it stood little chance against faster, more heavily armed monoplanes. However, the outstanding maneuverability of the Falco concerned the British. An intelligence report in late October 1940 circulated to all pilots and their squadrons, with copies to the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, and the War Cabinet, declared: "The manoeuvrability of the CR.42s, in particular their capacity to execute an extremely tight half roll, has caused considerable surprise to other pilots and undoubtedly saved many Italian fighters from destruction." As if to underscore this obvious concern, the Falco fought against the Gloster Gladiator over Malta, and later against the Hawker Hurricane, sometimes with unexpected success. The CR.42 produced what was perhaps its best performance with the Hungarian Air Force on the Eastern Front, where its pilots claimed an overall kill/loss ratio of 12 to 1. Even if the truth was only a quarter of this, it would still be quite impressive.

    Curtiss P-40 Warhawk
    The P-40 was essentially a modification of the preceding Curtiss fighter, the P-36 Hawk. This significantly reduced development time and enabled a relatively quick commencement to production and entry to service. The Warhawk was used by most Allied powers during World War 2 and remained in front-line service until the end of the conflict. It was the third most-produced American fighter of the war, after the P-51 and P-47. British Commonwealth and Soviet air forces used the name "Tomahawk" for models equivalent to the P-40B & C, and "Kittyhawk" for the D and later variants. The P-40 first saw combat with British Commonwealth squadrons in the Middle East and North African campaigns in June 1941. Its lack of a two-stage supercharger made it inferior to the Bf 109 and the Fw 190 in high-altitude combat and it was rarely used in operations in NW Europe. Nevertheless from 1941 to 1944 the P-40 played a critical role with Allied air forces in three major theaters: North Africa, the Southwest Pacific and China. It also had a significant role in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Alaska and Italy. The P-40's performance at high altitudes was not as important in those theaters, where it served as an air superiority fighter, bomber escort and fighter-bomber. Although it gained a postwar reputation as a rather mediocre design best suited to close air support, recent research including scrutiny of the records of individual Allied squadrons, indicates that the P-40 performed surprisingly well as an air superiority fighter, at times suffering severe losses but also taking a very heavy toll of enemy aircraft, especially when flown against the lightweight and maneuverable Japanese fighters like the Oscar and Zero in the manner recommended in 1941 by General Claire Chennault, the AVG's commander in southern China. The P-40 offered the additional advantage of low cost, which kept it in production as a ground-attack aircraft long after it was obsolete as a fighter.

        The P-40 was one of the most important planes of the war.

        I loved the Aussie P40 campaign for CFS2.

              Better brace yourself, MM, because there are going to be quite a lot of dissimilar pairings throughout this campaign.

                i go with the P-40. it wasn't the right fighter, but was avaiable at the right time.



                What's the fastest biplane fighter? the CR-42B, a Falco with a DB601. it could reach 520 KPH!

                    For extent and usefulness of service, combined with the very large numbers produced, the P-40 wins this match very comfortably IMO.
