  • Greatest Westerns Round 2: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly v. True Grit

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (1966)
The Good is Blondie, a wandering gunman with a strong personal sense of honor. The Bad is Angel Eyes, a sadistic hitman who always hits his mark. The Ugly is Tuco, a Mexican bandit who's always only looking out for himself. Against the backdrop of the Civil War, they search for a fortune in gold buried in a graveyard. Each knows only a portion of the gold's exact location, so for the moment they're dependent on each other. However, none are particularly inclined to share...

    True Grit (1969)
The murder of her father sends a teenage tomboy, Mattie Ross (Kim Darby), on a mission of "justice", which involves avenging her father's death. She recruits a tough old marshal, "Rooster" Cogburn (John Wayne), because he has "grit", and a reputation of getting the job done. The two are joined by a Texas Ranger, La Boeuf (Glen Campbell), who is looking for the same man (Jeff Corey) for a separate murder in Texas. Their odyssey takes them from Fort Smith, Arkansas, deep into the Indian Territory (present day Oklahoma) to find their man.

Grit was the better film but Eastwood is far and away the better actor. He never even chages his hat or scarf. JW belongs in pink panitie films. Clint gets the vote.

No way that Eastwood beats out the Duke in any western, except for maybe Josie Wales or Unforgiven...... not with a spaghetti western.

This was reaaaaally difficult. Two of my favourite westerns ever. In the end I had to go for the 'one-eyed fat man.'

I love Clint Eastwood movies...The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of the best westerns ever made...The Unforgiven was a masterpiece...Hang 'em High was a very good movie; even though it was a Spaghetti-ish Western.

I just don't get the appeal of the Spaghetti Westerns...On a comic book level, they are kind of entertaining...But True Grit is a far beter movie and a better western than any of the Spaghetti Westerns.

A difficult choice. I voted for True Grit even though I think Alan Badillion Trahern should be buried in the unknown grave next to Arch Denton.
