  • Greatest Spy Movies Round 2: CASINO ROYALE vs GOLDFINGER

    Casino Royale

In Prague, James Bond earns his 00 status when he corners and kills corrupt MI6 section chief Dryden and his underground contact Fisher. In Uganda, Mr. White, a senior official in a shadowy organization, arranges a meeting between a terrorist tied banker, Le Chiffre, and Obanno, the leader of a guerrilla group seeking a safe haven for his funds. Le Chiffre assures the leader that there is "no risk in the portfolio," but his investments actually involve considerable risk: he short sells successful companies and then profits by engineering terrorist attacks to sink their stock values.

    Goldfinger

The powerful tycoon Auric Goldfinger has initiated "Operation Grand Slam," a cataclysmic scheme to raid Fort Knox and obliterate the world economy. James Bond, armed with his specially equipped Aston Martin (its accessory package includes built-in machine guns, a smoke screen and an ejector seat), must stop the plan by overcoming several outrageous adversaries. First there's Oddjob, the mute servant who kills at the toss of a lethal hat; next, the beautiful Jill Masterson, who gives new meaning to the phrase "golden girl"; and finally, sexy pilot Pussy Galore, whose romantic feelings for Bond complicate her involvement in Goldfinger's high-flying scheme.

    I realize it's a little counter-intuitive... but Goldfinger, definitely.

    What's not to like?

For me, at least Goldfinger tries to be a spy movie. I know there are debatable aspects of the film. But the new Bond does nothing for me. All this CGI and tech-for-tech's sake leaves me cold. I want plot, and acting in my movies!

The last straw in Casino Royale for me was the Onstar-enabled adrenalin kit in the glove compartment of Bond's car. PLease!

This is true - I mean yes Goldfinger is a little (?) silly at times, but it's still inserting someone under cover to try to catch someone in the act.

Casino Royale everyone knows exactly who everyone else is right up to the point where the CIA shows up to save the day.

Well... right up to the slight plot twist there at the end.

Goldfinger. At least one of the Bond movies gets eliminated.

I'll be so bold and say that the Bond films got old very fast. I would have rather have had Rambo 47 than the Bonds. Boring and we knew how just about everything was going to turn out before we even started watching. After Goldfinger they turned to ___________.

Old Bond vs. New Bond, a tough one, but I like the new Casino, truer to the original Bond as written by Fleming.

IIRC Fleming was not happy with Connery playing Bond either, as he was not suave enough and had hair on his chest.
Fleming would likely have abhorred Craig interpreting Bond as a working class hero.

I judged them as action spy movies unrelated to Fleming's Bond and then Casino Royale easily comes out on top.

                      Gold- FINGER! wa-waaa-wa...!

I've got to go with the original Bond in Goldfinger for a number of reasons.
                      1. Sean Conner
                      2. the original "Bond...James Bond" character, suave, sophisticated, savvy, sensual, savage and sure of himself in any situation.
                      3. the song - Shirley Bassey's rendition made it to the "Top Ten' on the charts.
and D. the CAR!!! COME ON! An Aston-Martin Db-5 equipped with MACHINE GUNS!(who among us has not wished for that option on our Opels from time to time?), oil slick dispenser, pop-up bullet proof shield, tire shredder wheel spinners, a (prehistoric) GPS with built-in homer locator, and EJECTION SEAT! Not to mention 33 MPG and numerous other features.
(I got to sit behind the wheel of one of the actual movie cars while it was at the New York World's Fair in 1964..I still have the picture somewhere)

I really like the new Bond movies. They really jumpstarted the franchise for me as I had grown bored with them.

                        PLUS: Eva Green!
