  • Greatest Blunders: Napoleon in Russia vs Karansebes (Round 4-Semifinals)

    Napoleon’s Invasion of Russia 1812

    Why?
Although Napoleon had organized an enormous force, he was lured ever deeper into mother Russia, resulting in the complete annihilation of his force of 500.000.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_invasion_of_Russia

The French invasion of Russia of 1812 (also known as the Patriotic War of 1812) was a turning point in the Napoleonic Wars, which reduced the French and allied invasion forces -the Grande Armée- to a tiny fraction of their initial strength and triggered a major shift in European politics, as it dramatically fragilized the previously dominant French position on the continent. The campaign itself was marked by extreme savagery and by the fact that both sides claimed victory in every engagement; however, if the military engagements proved less decisive than before, by the end of 1812, the French defeat was clear, even though the Russians could hardly be said to have won. It did however weaken the French hegemony in Europe to such an extent that the former enemies of the French Empire, at first Prussia, then Austria were encouraged to break their alliance with France and switch camps, which would trigger the War of the Sixth Coalition.

    Battle of Karansebes 1788
    Why?
A false warning by drunken Austrians causes the death of 10.000 of their fellow countrymen even before the enemy has been sighted...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kar%C3%A1nsebes

The Battle of Karánsebes was an early episode in the Austro-Turkish War of 1787-1791. Different portions of an Austrian army, which was scouting for forces of the Ottoman Empire, fired on each other by mistake, in a self-inflicted disaster. The battle took place on the evening of 17 September 1788. The Ottomans were victorious and captured the city.

"History of Nations" by Sir Edward Creasy of Harvard University

"...But during a night march from Karansebes toward Temesvar
on September 20 the Austrian army fell into a causeless panic
which thoroughly disorganized the troops for a time. This,
combined with the heavy losses from disease, made the whole cam-
paign a fruitless one for the Austrians, while the Turks gained
some small successes. Altogether Austria lost in the operations of
this year 30,000 men in killed and wounded, the greater part of
whom fell at Karansebes or in desultory skirmishes, and 40,000
more, who were swept away by pestilential disorders.

Even if the info on Karansebes was understated I couldn't go past Nappy throwing away an Empire.

Bonaparte had Europe in his hand and gambled it all on a pointless campaign. This is the big one.

The Invasion of Russia by Bonaparte in my opinion was the greatest blunder in military history, and I will vote for it again in the next round as well.

I now must vote against Karansebes. It's amazing run to the Final 4 was great, but now it must go down to Nappy in Russia. It just doesn't compare to Nap's greatest blunder.

              Close one,

I'll have to stick with Kransebes. The disaster of the winter campaign was largely due to events out of Nappy's control (it was the fiercest winter Russia had in a long time, and he was against a cunning and determined enemy). Kransebes was just shear human stupidity.

Hrmmm, Kransebes is a tad behind.

Let's see if we can't even things out a little

Am I the first one to use a wild card this game?

Drunken Austrians: I've personally known a few!

Seriously, I vote for Kransebes. Agree with RG.

Voted for Napoleon in Russia. "How to be overconfident and not properly run a campaign" could be a good book title here.
