  • The end in sight in Iraq?

The US has announced it will relinquish control of the reigns of government power back to the Iraqi people in June of 2004 with a full constitution being drawn up by the end of 2005. Seems like a pretty good PR move, but lets hope it doesn't signal to the terrorists that their policy of chaos and bombings is the way to force us out on their terms. Maybe it is too late for that anyway?

Our forefathers died to give us freedom, not free stuff.

Well the goal is to give the country to the Iraqis at some point and see how it goes, right? I don't think transfering power to this provisional government is going to be much of a problem. Since this council was appointed by the US, it is fair to say this is the friendliest group they could reasonably install.

The bigger issue will be elections in 2005. Will the elections be truly managed by traditional powerbases inside the country or will it be a dog and pony show? Obviously a lot will be at stake in the first Iraqi elections.

Isn’t it too late now ?
This policy should have been taken from the beginning, just after the end of the war, when the Iraqi population was still ready to follow the Coalition and build with it a new Iraq, when the Iraqis were happy that the Americans had destroyed the Saddam’s regime. At this moment the Iraqis would have desired to help and would have had the feeling to build their own Iraq. And then they would have fought the Baasist or Islamist guerilla with the will to defend their own country, not a country occupied by foreign forces. But to the contrary since the end of the war the Americans have given to the Iraqis the impression that they were here only to occupy the country, to colonize it. And now a part of the Sunnit population thinks that the guerilla fights the occupation, fights for them, for the liberation of the country. Now it is too late because anything made by the Coalition will have big difficulties to be accepted by the population.
And of course this decision is like if the Americans showed to the population and the guerilla that this guerilla obtains good results and is able to hurt the coalition.
The coalition should first divide the country in three autonomous region, like in Bosnia, each part being well separated from the others. Currently everybody has the impression that all Iraq is hit by the guerilla, when only the Sunnit part (20 %) is in trouble, only a little part.

        Disasterous Decision

The announcment of the decision to complete the turn-over of soverignty to the 'Iraqi people' on a date certain, and regardless of events can only give hope to those who wish the United States ill. Now they know that they only have to hold out until July.
