Irish aid boat seeks UN help to reach Gaza
by Andrew Bushe Andrew Bushe – Thu Jun 3, 4:11 pm ET

DUBLIN (AFP) – An Irish aid boat was on course to dock in Gaza at the weekend, activists said Thursday -- and called on the UN to help ensure its safe passage after deadly Israeli raids stopped a flotilla this week.

The MV Rachel Corrie -- carrying 15 people including a Nobel Prize winner and a former top UN official -- was about 250 miles (400 kilometres) from where six boats were boarded in an Israeli raid which left nine dead.

"We want to emphasise that our aim is not provocation but getting our aid cargo into Gaza," said former UN assistant secretary general Denis Halliday, in a statement released by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC).

"We are calling on the UN to inspect the cargo and escort us into Gaza, and to send a UN representative to sail on board before they enter the exclusion zone," he added.

Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen has said that the Rachel Corrie must be allowed to reach Gaza and warned of "the most serious consequences" if Irish citizens were injured."

What "serious consequences" could Ireland impose on Israel from a realistic standpoint other than just making lots of angry noises? They aren't exactly the economic or military powerhouse of Europe.

And by what authority are they saying this???

Israel has a right to blockade Gaza. Alan Dershowitz (certainly I'm no big fan of his in general) wrote a very informative article yesterday laying out the legal aspects of Israel's position.

Now what would make things very "interesting" would be for Turkish naval ships to escort a convoy. That would be a huge problem as well as an unmistakable sign that Turkey is without a doubt Israel's enemy.

I don't think we've heard the end of this approach. Unfortunately.

And once out of "International Waters" how would Israel react to an escort I wonder? I hope that the Irish PM will elaborate on what Ireland might do. Israel must be seriously reconsidering any action . Robert

What the heck is wrong with just letting the Israelis look and then go on their merry way to Gaza after they leave when no contraband is found?

Hmmmm......and yet this didn't happen the first time. That was claimed the first time that there would not be any resistance. And then what happened? What makes this any different? I don't think the Israelis will act the same this time. Robert

"Asked how its passengers would respond if Israeli authorities try to stop or board the vessel, he told AFP: "Their aim is to get to Gaza, but if the Israelis try to stop them they won't resist."

"They'll sit down and put their arms in the air... They can't very well carry on through a blockade. They will sit down and be arrested."

Good question. It looks like the only item that would be a problem would be the cement. Robert

Did I miss the memo that all these idiots got. In the past Israel might not of let the aid through. But for the past two weeks I all I have heard out of Israel if you got aid just dock it here and we will send it on. I go back to my earlier thoughts in which it is ok to think of Israelis as rabib mad dogs who only want to kill people while if you said the same about muslims you are racist.

So in whatever war is fought next, blockades and military exclusion zones will be illegal.

Last I heard "Rachel Corry" agreed to dock at Ashdod port, then changed it's mind and is pulling back to Ireland.

Best assumption- they aren't carrying any "humanitarian aid".

They had the manifest and the loading on TV last night. Assuming that the TV stuck arround to film all of it then theres nothing there that goes bang. Well, unless HAMAS takes up wheel chair drag racing.

There was a load of Cement. About 500 tons or so Which has been listed in the British papers as being an excluded or blocked item by Israel. Not sure if thats the actual case or for that matter why it would be.

More likley that the Irish Government lent on them to pull out, or they just ran out of bottle. Its one thing to shout about how brave you are going to be and another to actually go out and do it.

But I still think who ever came up with the IDF boarding plan needs his arse kicking.

These photos, for example, show that the ships are carrying much, much, much less then they are capable.

Though the writing is in Hebrew, I am sure you can make out from the photos alone:

Ireland is a member of the European Union, the EU is already considering applying commercial sanctions on israel until it lift the blockade on Gaza, another "incident would speed up the decision.

The EU is the 1st commercial partner of Israel with a 80% share of its export.

Golani, ships carry bulk, when it's heavy stuff they have to consider their loadline and limit the cargo to that value altough they would still have space in their hold, but when carrying low density stuff their holds are full way before the load line are at sea level.

Since Israel won't let them into Gaza due to security measures, what about Egypt they do border Gaza and last I heard they opened their border with Gaza.
Egypt could easily come out as the "hero" of this whole fiassco but insted they are all silent.
