The British need to keep their stand and others need to be united with them who support the sanctions if Iran seizes a tanker then Trump will have to respond militarily this time.

      Prevention is the best cure.

I don't understand why people want to play in to Iran's provocations. Any military action that doesn't remove the theocratic fascists makes them stronger.

Anything but forcibly removing them from power isn’t going to change their government if they’re going to be more aggressive by attacking then a punishing strike on their military and infrastructure is what’s needed or they’ll become much worse.
Containment works unless they create nuclear weapons too bad Saudi Arabia isn’t treated the same way.

It's interesting how this will unfold.

There are conflicting statements on who asked for the tanker to be seized. A senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official and Spain's acting foreign minister said the order came from U.S. and U.K.
Gibraltar's government said neither the United States nor Britain asked for the ship to be seized.

well gibraltar is part of the UK so...if gibraltar seized it, that means the UK government ordered it...

There's no question who seized it. Seems they are sidestepping around saying exactly who asked for it. Making it appear to be something it's not. From what I've read on it so far, the shipment of oil violated EU sanctions placed against Assad back in 2011. That's why it was seized.

Gibraltar is not part of the UK it is a self governing British Crown Possession. The British armed forces provide its defence as they are responsible for defending HM Queen's territories and if a ship was threatening Gibraltar would therefore be required to take the requisite action. They could be asked to take action by the Gibraltar government (but would need authorisation from Whitehall/Downing Street) Things aren't always so simple. Its most likely that Washington asked the British government

"british crown possession" sounds like owned by the UK to me...it's a part of the UK plain and simple. there are plenty of 'self governing' portions of nations...the indian tribes for example...but they're still part of the US no matter how you look at it.

Yeah, the RM isn't going to be seizing foreign ships unless HMG tells them to.

And you'd be wrong. The UK is the Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the Principality of Wales and the Duchy of Cornwall. It does not include the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands which are crown possessions as is Gibraltar

You’re trying really hard to pointlessly argue semantics.
they are possessions of the crown, which means the queen of England owns them and they answer to her.

its like saying that US territories aren’t the US because they’re not states

She's Queen of Canada, Australia, New Zeeland, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papoea-New Guinea, the Salamon Islands , Tuvalu, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and a bunch of other islands..

But she's not queen of England as I far I know.

She is Queen of England and of Scotland - two separate crowns. Technically she's Elizabeth I of Scotland and Elizabeth II of England.
