Royal Brunei Airlines' first all-female pilot crew lands plane in Saudi Arabia - where women are not allowed to drive

The first ever all-female flight deck crew for Royal Brunei Airlines has operated a plane from Brunei to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

But while it was a milestone for the airline, the pilot crew touched down in country where women are still not allowed to drive a car.

To mark Brunei’s National Day on 23 February, which celebrates the country’s independence, Captain Sharifah Czarena Surainy, Senior First Officer Dk Nadiah Pg Khashiem and Senior First Officer Sariana Nordin landed flight BI081 in the Middle Eastern country.

The occasion came just over three years after Captain Sharifa Czarena Surainy became the first female captain of a flag carrier in Southeast Asia. She told The Brunei Times in 2012: “Being a pilot, people normally see it as being a male dominant occupation.”

“As a woman, a Bruneian woman, it is such a great achievement. It’s really showing the younger generation or the girls especially that whatever they dream of, they can achieve it,” said the captain, who completed her initial pilot training at the Cabair Flying School in Cranfield.

Wondering how long before Saudi Arabia joins the 21st century regards women's rights?

Is that The or They and what is the 18th - hole? I usually finish in the 18th hole of which there are none in the Kingdom. I'm sorry but I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you just not understanding a -___ing word of what you are saying

Even in the Islamic world, Saudi culture is being left behind and is beginning to change.

About the only good note is that such social change accelerates exponentially.

As a Leader of it's Culture, about a Century or more behind the Curve it should have been following ...
... how~why allowed membership in say the United Nations when its Internal Policies violate the principles of UN Membership ???

            Does it?!

I've seen occasion of the opposite!

Please show "Us" the maths and statistics that move this out of the 'personal'/Subjective range of rumination (i.e. that Accelerated exponential part) ...

If every nation whose internal policies violate the principles were ejected the UN would be a very much smaller organisation

For the same reason we let in the Soviets - the idea was to let people talk about things first, before shooting each other.

                Simple.

Between the beginning of recorded history and, say, 1900, how many nations allowed women to vote? How about between 1900 and today?

Map it to a graph and you'll see a very pronounced spike in the last century - a rapid and exponential upswing. Today there are fewer nations that deny women the vote than give them the vote... Which was not true even 200 years ago. After millennia of no change, it rapidly and exponentially changed over just one century.

You can do the same with slavery, views on rape, liberal political systems like democracy and republicanism, etc.

So how are you seeing the opposite?

Actually given the segregation in the South in 1942 the USA was more than probably violating the principles when the UN was created!

Who is We ? We whoever that is didn't let the Soviet Union in. The UN was created on 1 Jan 1942 at a meeting of all those nations at war with the Axis one of which was very definitely the USSR

Which was a different outcome than saying "we don't like you, we're going to create our own democracy-only club".

With Uncle Joe at the helm, human rights were hardly at the top of the Kremlin's 'to do' list.

The Islamic world was not satisfied with the Geneva Convention, so knocked up one more in keeping with Sharia - in Cairo some years later.

Not very realistic given that Uncle Joe at that time was in charge of more than 50% of the anti Axis war effort.

Absolutely. It was pragmatic and meant to hold disparate ideologies together - which was my point. The UN had the trappings of a democratic system, but it was not a democracy-only club because then you would alienate and expel those who you want (or need) to be talking with.

I don't think t hey were quite so precise then - it was merely a marriage of convenience to survive and beat the Axis any way they could. As Churchill said the Devil would have been welcome.
