  • Iran flies unarmed military drone over US aircraft carrier

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) Iran flew a surveillance drone over a U.S. aircraft carrier and published video of the encounter Friday, the latest in a series of edgy naval incidents between the two countries in the Persian Gulf after the recent nuclear deal.

While the U.S. Navy stressed it knew the drone was unarmed and the flyover didn't interrupt U.S. operations in the war against the Islamic State group, the incident underlined the continued tension over control of waterways crucial to global oil supplies. It follows a rocket test last month by the Islamic Republic near coalition warships and commercial traffic, as well as Iran's brief capture of American sailors who strayed into its territorial waters.

Iranian state television and the semi-official Fars news agency, which has close ties to the Revolutionary Guard, published identical images Friday both said came from the drone. The footage, which The Associated Press could not independently verify, purported to show the drone being launched and then hovering over an unidentified aircraft carrier, a targeting bracket briefly passing over a jet parked on the deck below.

Shoot the next one down! What if the next drone decides to crash into our ship? First they fly a drone over a carrier, then they seize two ships? Time to cut them off at the knees.

They should have let Phalanx take down this one.

You're forgetting their recent piracy. They tried for a US flagged ship, then moved on to a Maersk one, remember?

This is all so ridiculous, I'm starting to wonder....

Is the US Govt setting Iran up?
Letting them get away with stuff until they pull a real boner, and then pounce?

In conjunction with the Israelis, a huge amount of damage could be done, might even be able to topple the Ayatollahs if its bad enough.
And, it might even open up a way to just take all those Billions the Mullahs are drooling over, and our Govt could just pocket it all in some way that they couldn't w/o a war to justify it.

Just wondering.... but there is a certain elegance to it.

If the US shoots down an unarmed drone in international waters then that could be taken as legitimising similar action by other nations against US fly overs (ie in the South China Sea) It's entirely possible that that was the Iranian idea. I suspect someone in the US chain of command was exercising intelligence rather than knee jerking.

Military conflict in this day and age does need to be justified to the people, so that's not an insane theory.

I imagine it's more banal though - they want the nuclear deal to stick so are willing to put up with some minor irritations to do so. Sort of like an older sibling ignoring a younger ones muffled taunts instead of immediately wailing on him.

The Chinese have been reported protesting about US overflying installations in the China Sea to which the US responded that it was international waters. If a US ship in international waters starts shooting down rece drones that whole argument goes out of the porthole. The Chinese and the Iranians are close and there are some in the Iranian military (particularly the revolutionary Guard) who don't want the nuclear deal to work so it's not too far fetched to suppose that the drone was a deliberate Iranian provocation attempting to kill two birds with one stone.

A lot of Americans believe in double-standards for international norms.

I'm sure they do but only an eejut would hand the Chinese and the Iranians a whip with which to beat the US in international forums etc.

National pride often overwhelms rational thought. That's a fairly universal truth.

The US should look into jamming the radio signals controlling the drones. Drones malfunction and crash all the time, right?

If you can sail a ship in international waters, you can fly an unarmed drone over international waters..

I did a quick look, and can't find any information about how close the drone was to the ship. I rarely get on a ship (like 21 days in 6 years), but I remember studying about safety and security zones. It was specific to vessels approaching on water, but surely there are safety and security zones for airspace.

Drone flew over carrier in international water, big deal.

To those which scream that drone should be shot down, what if somebody blast your, for example spy plane, from the sky in international airspace?

may be hard since the aircraft carrier could be involved in commanding strikes on ISIS or just acting like a airport.
