  • Islamist threat to destroy the Pyramids and Sphinx

    From: http://english.alarabiya.net/article...13/249354.html

Egypt is taking a jihadist’s calls to destroy the Giza Pyramids and Sphinx “seriously,” an Egyptian interior ministry source has said, according to reports. The source, who was not named, spoke to the London-based Asharq al-Awsat newspaper late Monday in response to Sheikh Murgan Salem al-Gohary’s television interview earlier this week.

Gohary, a jihadist with self-professed links to the Taliban, called for the “destruction of the Sphinx and the Giza Pyramids in Egypt,” drawing ties between the Egyptian relics and Buddha statues. The Islamist, previously twice-sentenced under former President Hosni Mubarak for advocating violence, called on Muslims to remove such “idols.”

“All Muslims are charged with applying the teachings of Islam to remove such idols, as we did in Afghanistan when we destroyed the Buddha statues,” he said on Saturday during a television interview on an Egyptian private channel, widely watched by Egyptian and Arab audiences. “God ordered Prophet Mohammed to destroy idols,” he added. “When I was with the Taliban we destroyed the statue of Buddha, something the government failed to do.”

His comments came a day after thousands of ultraconservative Islamists gathered in Tahrir Square to call for the strict application of Sharia law in the new constitution.

I hope it is a hoax - the antiquities of Egypt belong to all of Humanity.

While such things belong to the Egyptians, as much as anyone CAN own them, they should be held in trust for future generations.

The Islamists' destruction of the giant Buddha in Afghanistan was not a hoax.

The Islamists' destruction, this year, of ancient tombs in Mali was not a hoax.

They don't like these non-Islamic monuments and artifacts.

The threat to the Pyramids and Sphinx has been around for a while, but takes on new import with the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and calls for Sharia law in Egypt, as evidenced by the referenced TV interview this week with Sheikh Murgan Salem al-Gohary and this week's pro-Sharia law demonstration in Cairo.

The Pyramids are probably too large to be destroyed by anything terrorist could manage. The Sphinx is a good deal smaller and exposed head has already been defaced. It might be vulnerable to a large, well planned attack.
Any metaphor will tear if stretched over too much reality.

Timbuktu contained a lot of Islamic books and the tombs of Muslim monarchs.

They don't like anything that goes against their strict version of Wahhabism Islam. This includes anything that is deemed to be a potential idol.

Hence the Saudis have bulldozed most of ancient Mecca; not wanting any sites from the Quran to become idols or shrines.

Did British Museum was discussing a possibility to
return some of Egyptian artifacts back to Egypt ?

Hope they did not do it yet.
