  • Pompeoís Visit: Allies or frenemies, US must choose

Indian's has chosen to give Narendra Modi a chance again. His first term was spent much visiting abroad it created lot of photo opportunities and good will, but many sticking issues remaining.

    Iran.
    S - 400

    etc.

Despite embracing US block and distancing it self from old friend our Prime Minister has little to show.

With US sanctions looming overhead over S - 400 deals. Once friendly Russian are also forcing India on many issues.

Like US Russian are also opposing any Outside weapons systems integration on Russian / especially Sukhoi fighter's.

Pompeoís Visit: Allies or frenemies, US must choose.

As US secretary of state Mike Pompeo arrives in India today, there will be much to discuss between him and the Indian leadership. For, India-US relations today remain inconsistent. On the one hand, Washington has been keen on ramping up defence ties with New Delhi and treating the latter as a strategic partner. On the other hand, the Donald Trump administration has been squeezing India on trade and making demands of it that are incongruent with the relationship of allies. Its decision to end Indiaís beneficiary status under the Generalised System of Preference trade arrangement, potential threat to curb H-1B visas, and abolishing of sanction waivers for oil purchases from Iran have all made India uncomfortable.

Besides, if the US thinks India can be a counterweight to China, it must help strengthen the Indian economy. It canít be that the US economy wins at the cost of the Indian economy. Trump canít have his cake and eat it too. Taken together, the US and India are truly at a crossroads. Washington can treat New Delhi as a genuine ally and show flexibility, or it can adopt a transactional approach that will force India to evaluate other options. The ball is in the US court.
