Less divided than 10 years ago. I see a more uniform pattern of voting.

Well, actually the ballots featured two candidates with this name: Yulia Timoshenko and her doppelganger called Yuri Timoshenko. This spoiler candidate got about 1% of votes, I've guess most simply mistook him for Yulia by mistake. Most probably this Yuri (a common truck driver before the last Maidan) was hired by Poroshenko's men to draw number of votes from his closest contender.
It's not surprising that America is trembling in awe after experiencing just a small portion of typical post-Soviet political technologies. US elections are simply a kindergarten game compared with what normally happens in the former Soviet Union.

Boiko in most pro-Russian regions. Zelensky in other eastern regions and Zakarpattia. In most racist regions Poroshenko and Timoshenko won.

In 2010 Yanukovich got the largest % of votes in the Donetsk region (76.04%) and the smallest in the Ivano Frankovsk (5.11%). The ratio is almost 15:1
Timoshenko got 53.78% in the Volyn region and 4.32% in the Donetsk oblast'. The ratio is 12.4:1
                  http://www.materik.ru/rubric/detail.php?ID=8323

In 2019 Zelensky gets 45.34% in the Dniepropetrosk (why the hell they use the old name?) region and 11.9% in the Lvov region. The ratio is 3.8:1
Poroshenko gets 35.33% in the Lvov region and 6.65% in the Lugansk region. The ratio is 5.3:1

Obviously the distribution is more uniform. Zelensky gets nearly the same % on Volyn (West), Kiev (center) and Donetsk (East). There are still regional distinctions but they became much blurred and there is no either/or situation like before.

It was in the second turn. We will probably see the similar pattern in three weeks.

Clever, but does reveal a rather low opinion of the electorate..

Eh - well they only have two parties and they're both the same,

Steve Bannon was here in Belgium the last election, the object was to examine if the mechanic of the Trump election could be applied in Europe too.

The Belgian system was explained to him and he turned slightly pale, when he saw the results he ran and never came back

What IS your opinion of Zelensky btw ? Reports here somewhat mixed..

Come now you are being unfair - there is a distinction - there is the nutty party and the really nutty party.

Currently here in Britain left and right wing merely indicates which ward of the asylum they should be locked in.

...the infinite electoral cynicism so characteristic of people in this profession
Actually a very popular election trick (I mean, doppelgangers)

Don't know. The man is a blank page: no experience, no political background, no party affiliations, some commonplaces as political program.
There were some persistent rumors that another man from the show-biz - a Ukrainian rock-star Vakarchuk could be a runner too and he seemed to be very popular. Such focus on amateur politicians is pretty curious.

We've see a similar trend here in the 90s, generally known "anti-politics" - people elected a Judo coach, various artists, businessmen, enfin anything but professional politicians.

Of course due to the Belgian coalition system, none made it to PM or President or anything like that.

                            Seems to have passed now..

Often the appeal of populist movements "we can't do any worse than the 'professional' politicians." Unfortunately history shows otherwise amazing though that may seem.

It seems that people everywhere are sick of the professional politicians. Certainly we have seen it here in USA. And it is not just Trump. Lots of socialist democrats made it in in the midterms. IMHO what we have is a class, yes a class, of professional politicians; they have no other job. They are beholding to their "underwriters", and you and I as ordinary can just go and suck wind. As an American I have been shocked at the problems with brexit. The people voted for it so pass it. Cripes! What do people vote for? As for me, politicians are lower than pimps.
