Reality: Dorenko suffered a hear attack while riding a motorcycle. Neither police nor medics have found anything "mysterious" about his deaths. More info:

Fellows, remember one simple thing: everything you read about Russia in British media is fake and propaganda. Even US media have some quality in them. British "journalism" is a total junk made by idiots and for idiots.

          • Russian journalists score a victory over police:
            https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-48600233
A very Hollywood-type story with a classical happy ending. I won't be surprised to see a film or even more likely a TV series adaptation.

The story really is the Russian judicial system – how the police stitched someone up, which should have put said person away quite effectively with the Russian courts' 99+% conviction rate.

Apparently some things have now gone too far in Russia. Good for it there's actually a reaction.

              • I would start with the fact that the guy got in trouble when he messed with interests of private business (corrupt cops were just hired guns) and was rescued when high-ranking officials pushed some buttons. A conclusion is that the private business is more dangerous for freedom of media than the government (regardless of what libertarians want us to believe). Another thing is that journalists "criticizing Putin" (as US and British media use to say) are actually more safe than those messing with concrete business interests of some influential people. Finally, the reports of the death of media in Russia are greatly exaggerated. The case demonstrated that these media do exist as an entity possessing group interests, strong cohesion and considerable political influence.

There is a more cynical version: demonstrative punishment of rogue cops is a good PR and and an easy way to boost government's popularity.

Discussed about 1000 times already. "Conviction rate" doesn't count cases closed before the final court verdict, like Golunov's case. The number is an artifact of the Russian legal procedure which doesn't indicate anything.

                • This private business was actually not private but in the hands of officials.
