  • Anniversary of Soviet operation in Afghanistan

Last Tuesday marked 33 years since the start of the over 9-year Soviet military operation in Afghanistan, which cost the Soviet Army more than 15,000 soldiers killed, and its Afghan allies, an estimated 26,500 killed and 28,000 missing in action.

In the following, Dr Yuri Laletin of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations deals with the ‘why’ and the ‘what for’ questions:
"The Soviet military deployment to Afghanistan came as a prompt response to the deployment of American medium-range ballistic missiles to Europe. Designed as a show of force aimed at stabilizing Afghanistan, the operation quickly unfolded into an open-ended war against foreign-backed mujahideen and elements in the Afghan population who could not put up with a foreign-military presence. The Soviet government had no choice but to roll up this hopeless and absolutely pointless war. Which it did in February 1989, when the last Soviet soldiers left the Afghan territory."

This decision was as strategically stupid as the Americans invading Afghanistan during the Bush adminstration. Afghanistan is divided and usually conducts wars among themselves. However if you invade they will all turn on you in unison. Look at the British Armysent to the Khyber Pass in the 1840s. Only 1 survived, a medical doctor allowed to leave because he was known to be a doctor. The Afghanis are not people to be invaded. Even with Baird - Atomic tank nightviewfinders on your night fighting equipment this is not terrain for ordinary military operations, nor simple political takeovers.

No it was not. Actually it was war against involving Afghanistan in Western sphere of influence and their military alliance; Afghanistan could be similar to other Central Asian republics and contribute significantly to USSR economy. It exported to USSR cotton and other agricultural production in significant quantities; Afghanis were studying in Moscow universities; Soviet engineers and managers were building industrial facilities in Afghanistan. When Gorbachev has betrayed Nadjibulla stopping all supplies he lasted almost year. Without Western weapon, money, and training situation would be much different.
On the other hand Bush’s action was not stupid at all. Afghanistan is suitable testing ground for US military industry, this war diverted attention from serious domestic problems, and did promote image of US as World military superpower and worldwide police force against bad guys. In the course of this war US and NATO did acquire military bases in Central Asian republics without much protests from Russian leaders; production of opiates skyrocketed in Afghanistan and flows now in Russia causing yearly death of 50 000 people mostly young. Not that bad for US geopolitical goals. One of reason for this war was taking under control route for transportation NG from Central Asia to India. If it was reached is disputable. Proclaimed goals of wars often are smokescreen for real ones.
