  • This 'Idea' will make the Pandemic in the US Much Worse

The Trump and DeVos 'push' to start schools up in September will not solve the problems and will spread the virus. Once again, he is making a decision of which he has no expertise.

Trump administration officials pushed for a full reopening of U.S. schools in the fall on Wednesday, though they stopped short of providing detailed plans for how to return students to the classroom as the coronavirus pandemic worsens.

“It’s time,” Vice President Mike Pence said at a White House Coronavirus Task Force briefing. “It’s time for us to get our kids back to school.”

The stance sets the stage for a fight between the federal government and local authorities who are planning only part-time, in-person learning. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos cited Fairfax County, Virginia’s plans for bringing students back for either no days or two days a week at the briefing as an example of “false paradigms” she said were being created.

“In the end it’s not a matter of if schools will open, but how,” she said. “They must fully open.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which has previously issued some guidance for schools, plans to issue additional recommendations for next week, the officials said. CDC Director Robert Redfield emphasized at the briefing that they’re only recommendations, and weren’t intended “to be used as a rationale to leave these schools closed.”

President Donald Trump attacked the existing guidelines in tweets on Wednesday, calling them “very tough & expensive.” He threatened to cut off funding to schools that don’t reopen.

Trump's handling of coronavirus is only election issue that matters

Trump now in open dispute with health officials as virus rages

Five months into a still-raging pandemic that has killed more than 130,000 Americans, the long-simmering tensions between President Donald Trump and the health experts who staff his government have escalated from private griping to shrugging disagreement to now open dispute.

In this instance Trump is acting in the best of interest of the children and the country.
It is widely accepted that the long period that children have had of school has been hugely damaging to their education and well being. Further children are almost entirely unaffected by the virus and have little involvement in its spread. In the UK numerous paedatricians and other child health professionals have demanded that children go back to school and schools return at 100% capacity in September. Nearly all European countries have returned their children to school in part or full already. Schools should return in full ASAP.

Opening the schools this fall with the pandemic in full swing in the US is not 'in the best of interest of the children and the country.'

European nations have a handle on the pandemic, the US does not with currently 50,000 new cases per day. Trump is ignoring this fact and has no idea what he is doing.

I note from your link that the American Academy of Pediatricians wants schools to be reopened. Thus in seeking to reopen schools Trump is acting fully in line with the relevant professional advice. This just looks like the Dems wanting to keep schools closed for political reasons.

And what 'political reasons' would that be?

Trump is in line with Trump, nothing more, nothing less.

The Dems seem want to stop children being educated for some reason. Can only because they see a political advantage in disruption going through until the election. I suspect that if this weren't an election year there would be no question of schools going back as soon as possible. They are putting children at risk for perceived political advantage.

Sorry, but unless you can back that up with factual material, it is merely a load of partisan garbage.

Why else would they be seeking to try and delay the opening of schools? The AAP say it is fine and necessary so all states should be preparing to bring back schools for all children for next term if not before.

Why else? To protect both the students and the teachers and their families. Get a grip.

And this from the CDC despite what Trump wants. Trump's ignorance and stupidity have already gotten people killed and now he does not care about the students and teachers and their families.

I wonder if Trump is planning to send his son back to school? Somehow, I doubt it-unless he doesn't care about him either.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will not revise its guidelines for reopening schools despite calls from President Donald Trump and the White House to do so, agency Director Dr. Robert Redfield said Thursday.

As anxious parents and educators across the country hand wring over how to safely bring children back to the classroom, the discord between Trump and his top health advisers over appropriate precautions has added another layer of uncertainty.

The President, against the advice of some of the nation's top health officials, has repeatedly called for schools to reopen as coronavirus cases surge across the country.

On Wednesday, while Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, warned that the country has to maintain control over the pandemic to get children back to school in the fall, Trump slammed the CDC's existing guidelines.

If schools don't open than their financial needs are reduced, they become empty buildings, etc. So cut funding appropriately, by half at least. Taxpayers shouldn't be paying for a nothing burger from "education".

I agree. This really seems like a no brainer.
How many people would agree to pay full tuition for an online course?
Why should taxpayers be forced to pay for costs that are not being incurred?

As I have said the top pediatricians have called for schools to be reopened in full. Pediatricians are specialist child health doctors and are thus the most appropriate to advise what is or is not safe for children. There is minimal risk to children from Covid and children rarely spread it. Ordinary flu is more dangerous to children than Covid and no one closes schools because of flu.
Clearly if some states do not intend to educate their children then it seems perfectly reasonable for the federal government to withhold any relevant funding it controls from those states. No point in spending taxpayers money for nothing.

It is becoming increasingly worrying that it might be a bad idea to allow even children to have it. As said the disease can cause lasting damage to the persons lungs and nerve system even in mild cases. It is only 'safe' in the sense that they are unlikely to die from it now. They can however act as disease carriers very efficiently. You can have remote learning in most but the lowest grades. And those who can't do that for any reason should constitute a small enough group that can be handled at schools with increased separations.

What evidence have you for children spreading the virus 'efficiently '? All the studies I have seen and this is reflevted in our national data, show that children rarely catch it, virtually never die from it, are not very sick from it and rarely pass it on.
