What about it don't you get, If the 4th of July is about white supremacy then so is any such celebration in any nation is a celebration of supremacy of some form.
Slavery was a purely American institution, Every nation on the North and South American continent had slavery thrust upon them by European nations that colonized these lands.
Are they still punishing the descendants of Vikings?

Actually, slavery was found all over the world. The Amerindians on both the American continents practiced Slavery. The Europeans brought African Slaves. The Spanish brought a lot of African Slaves to their colonies. So did the Dutch and French. Sweden might have imported some as well. The Barbary States in North Africa also did a lot of Slave Raiding in the Med and the Atlantic. They even hit Iceland!

In America, even Free Blacks could and did own Slaves.

How is Colin punishing you by not celebrating the 4th? He's not stopping you from enjoying it.

After reading the rest of Colin's posts, his issue isn't just with slavery or the past. He was speaking on modern day imperialism as well. So to paraphrase what he said, there's a lot more you have to answer for than just slavery and it's just as much about the present as it is the past.

Oh, so now you say I have more to answer for....Would you like to be specific?

Not you specifically. I was paraphrasing his posts. Here's his exact quote; "America has always sanctioned and besieged Black and Brown bodies both at home and abroad. America militarism is the weapon wielded by American imperialism, to enforce its policing and plundering of the non white world."

So it's not just about slavery. It's modern day imperialism he has an issue with, among other things.

Then shouldn't you have paraphrased it as "we" and not "you"? After all, you are an American and his accusation was directed at us all.
If I did that would you not have been taken aback?

Not really. But I agree that American imperialism needs to end, so I wouldn't be included as part of the problem he's referring to.

It’s still whataboutism. It’s like saying ISIS police cut the heads off criminals so what’s wrong with us shooting them?

I know it seems like it, but I’m not picking a fight, I’m just not sure why any of this is important to you.

Some guy that was good at something to do with a ball is the font of knowledge? Geez. I wish I’d spent more time playing hooky so I could have spent more time playing hockey (heh a pun, but I was very good) so my inane rambling was taken as the word of God.

So what? You know what the day means to you. Enjoy it. Who cares what he says? I mean if some guy wearing a nappy and an ice cream container on his head says your mum is an alien does it stop you visiting her on her birthday?

Still not sure what the Vikings have to do with anything though

Again, how was America founded on white supremacy?

                        United States

                        Survey time period
                        1790 to 1880

Percentage of African Americans living in slavery (according to US Census Bureau):
                        1790 - 92.14%
                        1800 - 89.18%
                        1810 - 86.47%
                        1820 - 86.81%
                        1830 - 86.28%
                        1840 - 86.56%
                        1850 - 88.06%
                        1860 - 89.01%
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 superseded all state and local laws requiring segregation. However, compliance with the new law was glacial at best, and it took years with many cases in lower courts to enforce it.
“Black ppl have been dehumanized, brutalized, criminalized + terrorized by America for centuries, & are expected to join your commemoration of ‘independence’, while you enslaved our ancestors,” Kaepernick posted on Twitter with an accompanying video.
Seems to me the facts match fairly well, and the independence really didn't set the blacks free.
But maybe someone can explain what good the blacks did get from independence.

Oh, don't bring in the vikings' slaves. Really.

This crap will end in the November 3rd elections where we either put an end to this new Civil War to restore freedom to all Americans, or the country is turned into a Socialist Dictatorship where a new Master Race emerges similar to what took place in Germany in the 30s.

                            Hi Urban hermit

                            I'd have to agree.

There's a real danger that the pendulum he helped move (slightly) from one extreme, will move more violently back and forth with comments such as this. Yes, he could be viewed as factually correct but there's a time and place for each and every discussion. By throwing every injustice into the same boiling pot at the same time, there's a real danger it'll boil over into violent anger (from both sides and we revisit 1861) or utter apathy because were overloaded with guilt or fear and we actually do nothing.

Whatever the colour of our skin, were all going to have to revisit the demons of our history, as no one is guilt free or above reproach. We need better History education in our classrooms, devoid of intrusion from outside bodies and vexation from often ignorant parents.

                            Regards

Of course he did. He has to stay in the news to maintain his "relevance", and noting guarantees the adoration of the media more than a statement like that.

The sheer ignorance of his statement is incredible.
