  • Has Trump Forfeited America's Moral Leadership?

Trump's conduct regarding the national protests is encouraging the dictators and autocrats of the world to continue their policies against human rights.

Remnants of the Berlin Wall in Germany still stand as a reminder that freedoms have always been hard won. Today, part of the wall has been painted over with a mural of George Floyd and the words "I can't breathe," another reminder of how quickly freedoms can be taken away.

The harrowing video of Floyd, an unarmed black American, meeting his death as police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes has sent shockwaves around the world, mobilizing protesters across Europe and Africa, and as far away as Australia and New Zealand.

But beyond the death of yet another black American at the hands of police, US President Donald Trump's response to it has further infuriated people and raised an important question: Is the US still the world's moral guardian?

This week, at least, the answer is a resounding No.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.

Facts First: CNN's Daniel Dale fact checks President Trump's comments about protests happening across the country as well as right outside the White House.

And Trump continues to spout lies and falsehoods:

...While Trump did accurately tout these numbers, he also made his usual assortment of lies and exaggerations -- delivering a rambling Rose Garden monologue in which he misled Americans about a variety of subjects on which he has been regularly dishonest.

No, Trump wasn't the one who got the Veterans Choice program created. No, Trump wasn't left empty ventilator shelves. No, Trump didn't completely ban travel from China or Europe. No, China isn't paying for Trump's tariffs. No, Wuhan wasn't the only part of China affected by the virus. No, this isn't the first time the US has lost so many people in a pandemic.

You never had it. You’ve played dirty pool since 1945. Some might have fallen for the leave it to beaver world that is promoted, but the smart know that the US has been nasty for a long time. Endless wars (and upset if the puppets don’t join), destabilising or overthrowing governments that don’t agree with you (and that includes allies), assassinations, a domestic government that looks more like cess pool than people who give a crap about you. Etc etc etc

I don’t mean that to sound too harsh as there is much to like about the US. Lots. But moral... please. We dance to your tune because you are the biggest kid on the block and can beat up the local bully, but if you were just another kid you would have run out of friends 30 years ago

I don't agree and the historical record does not support that idea.
