  • It got a litle wet around here.

    Seven inches plus of rain on saturated ground ended up causing this;

    This picture is of Wixum Lake at the place where the earthen dam collapsed by the overloaded spillway. Note from the boat dock how the lake level is still way above normal. There is a video showing a mudslide in front of that area followed by the lake starting to pour through the breach.

    An areal photo of the breach. It has already flooded the valley below.

    The lake had flooded this road prior to the dam failure. Rapidly flowing water from the West Branch of the lake took out that bridge as the East Branch is drained through the breach.

    Sanford Dam when the flash flood caused by the failure of the Edenville Dam has hit it.

    What is left of the Sandford Dam.

    My neighborhood the following afternoon. The night of the failures an emergency evacuation had to take place at St. Francis Nursing Home which is currently flooded.

    By orders of M-Dot, the bridge here, on M-46 is to remain closed until it is inspected even though it had suffered no damage in 86 and none was threatened this time. I suspect that our Dictator Governor is punishing us for the protest in Lansing as she toured the damage by helicopter, then went into her rant of wearing masks and social distancing. This has caused Meijers to run out of food as the delivery trucks have to find a way to get to the store.

    This is the bridge just South of the dam at Edenville. It sits some 50foot above the river.

        Looks awful.
        How much rain did you get in those areas? On the other side of the lake, we got 5 to 6 inches.
        The picture of the bridge being out was amazing. I’ve never seen anything like that in this area.

        I hope you survived the storm ok.

          I measured seven inches. They had at least that amount or more in the Tittabawassee River watershed. Tawas got eight. You are right about the flat land around here. Photo is from Wixum Lake before and after. This is going to be a huge loss both to home and cottage owners and Billings Township.

            Stay safe Ron and excellent posting. It's raining heavily here with flood watches, etc., but nothing like the above.

              Ron, you are just going to love this. Detroit News is reporting that after the Feds revoked Boyce Hydro's license it was turned over to the state, and. . .

              Days after feds revoked the dam's license to generate power, the state assumed oversight, inspected the dam and declared it and its spillways to be in "fair structural condition."

              Over the next two years, state regulators appear to have focused increasingly on what they said was the company's unauthorized drawdown of winter water levels of Wixom Lake, which they said created a danger to freshwater mussels.
              Good god! First MDEQ screws the holy pooch in Flint, and now the Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy screws Midland. So much for government "experts."

                Yes, I am very familiar with the fight for the past 14 years when Boyce Hydro took control of those dams to generate power for the Consumer's Grid. Suing is the typical response in spite of this not being their fault given that there were already plans in place for making the necessary upgrades in the next two years and this being one of those 500 year floods that dam was never designed to handle. There is always been a draw down done each year for the purpose of inspection and repairs. It became permanent when the Feds revoking their license, then the lake was filled back up as the results to complaints by homeowners and another Federal agency. So, unless the lawyers want to take ownership of all of the 100 year old dams on the Tittabawassee River, they are not going to get anything other then to bankrupt the owners.

                The good thing about this is that the authorities were aware of the condition of the dam and had implemented plans years ago to respond to such a threat. As a result, the alert went out via cell phone and by the Emergency Broadcast System, as well as by the local authorities, when signs of a failure showed up. Because most downriver residences were aware of the flooding occurring in Wixum Lake, everyone made it to high groundin time. No one got hurt or drowned.

                    Always good to plan for failure but not plan or act to prevent it. Those plans for response will seal their fate in any court since it conforms beyond doubt prior awareness.

                    i am sorry to hear what your state is going through. As usual, the people suffer while the politicians pontificate.

                          Stupid forum. Had to repost.

                          The river only got withend two feet of flooding my property, However other places were not as fortunate. Videos showing Midland, Small Lake Dam which is upstream of the failed Edenville Dam. That dam was reinforced years ago with steel seawall and an emergency spillway. You can see the damage that has taken place already from a 500 year flood, something those dams were never designed for.

                          This one is one of the best I have found so far. It really shows the devastation one would not normally see from a flash flood in such flat land as it is in Midland County;
