  • United Nations Facing Cash Crisis

You just can't make stuff like this up. NO BAILOUT!

1:03 p.m. U.N. facing cash crisis, made worse by pandemic: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the U.N. is facing a cash crisis because of non-payment of dues by member states, which has been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic. The U.N. chief said in a letter to the 193 U.N. member nations obtained Thursday by the Associated Press that outstanding payments for regular budget operations have now reached $2.27 billion “and we have no clear indication of when these payments might be received.” Guterres said “unpredictable cash inflows, exacerbated by the global crisis posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, seriously threaten” the U.N.’s ability to do its work. He announced a hiring freeze.

Translation: "America must bail us all out!"

Let it go. It's useless anyway.

Provide the opportunity of jaw-jaw rather than war-war, in a generally universally agreed upon institutionalized format.

The US can of course imagine itself as a lone tiger prowling about and how that is good enough an international policy. Except the tiger right now is running a fever...

How has that worked out in the past?

Judging by history, pretty well, in fact. Before the UN were the glory days of American foreign policy.

They condemn anyone trying to do the right thing and place the criminals and abusers in charge of policing themselves. The very concept that a bunch of political hacks can solve anything is ludicrous to begin with.

Nations learned to jaw-jaw AND make war at the same time.

Diplomacy existed before the UN, itll exist after.

If such a large number of nations don't feel the UN is valuable, then obviously it isn't. The market has spoken.

Given that the UN only part of an entire system, best guide is how traditonal great-power politics used to work.

You know, the kind Putin wants to bring back. You should look for something like the proposition of a "New Yalta".
