  • Border Wall Updates

This thread is dedicated to the on-going construction of the southern border wall. The links below provide current updates as they occur.

TRACK THE STATUS OF TRUMP’S BORDER WALL

    PROJECT OVERVIEW (INTERACTIVE MAP BELOW)

    https://www.trumpwall.construction

We looked at every mile of the U.S.-Mexico border. Now you can, too – right here.

Could a wall be built? Would it work? Those were some of the questions that we had in mind when we set out to see, film and map every foot of the U.S.-Mexico border. This map will show you video of the entire border, and all the fencing we could document from the air and the ground. You can also explore the issues in video stories, see 360-degree videos and get guided tours of portions of the border. Here's what we learned.

How will the money taken from other government projects be replaced? Or will it?

I'm OK with diverting $3.8 billion intended for military equipment towards the wall construction. IMO getting the wall built is top priority ATM.

There's a privately funded wall on the New Mexico border that is completed but they are forced to leave the gate open during the day.

Taking funds from combat troops to build a wall that is already being climbed over using cheap construction material is a BAD deal. A JOKE

If it's a private wall why do they have to keep the door open?

                That's a good question.

A privately funded border wall in New Mexico is being forced by a government agency to keep a gate open during the day, although local authorities have decided the door can be closed at night, according to an agreement reached Friday with the builders.

The gate is between private and US government owned property not a through gate across the border. The agreement to keep it open in the daytime has to do with government access to their property as a previously ungated road was being used for that purpose and the gate now cuts that off.

U.S. officials from the International Boundary and Water Commission said the barrier was blocking a government-owned access road and the agency had repeatedly asked the group to keep the gate open.

Trump just diverted some from the F-35 program because it was sitting unused. The program was given more money by Congress than it required (probably because Congresscritters from one state or another threw extra in that the AF didn't ask for just to do their home state / district a favor). Trump diverted some of that to the wall.

Among the big-ticket items taking a hit is the Air Force’s F-35 program, which will lose $156 million for procurement. The funding “is excess to current programmatic need,” the notice says, adding that “it was based on a higher number of aircraft than” was requested in the fiscal 2021 budget.

In all, aircraft funding will lose $1.4 billion, according to the notice.

Shipbuilding will also take a hit, with the landing helicopter assault replacement program losing $650 million and the expeditionary fast transport program losing $261 million. Money for both programs is “early to current programmatic need,” according to the notice.

This sort of thing isn't new. Powerful congresscritters do it all the time. Years ago a Republican named Trent Lott from Mississippi made sure his district got a new order for another LHA for the Navy even though the Navy didn't want one simply because the shipyard building them was in his district. Everybody in Congress does that crap with our money. Better it go to a wall than get wasted on a last minute spending spree at the end of the FY like it otherwise would.

If the funding is needed then Congress can replace it.
4 or 5 billion for Wall funding is pocket change compared to the $855 bllion Farm bill
If Congress didn't want fundng diverted they shouldnt have given the President that power

Except, it shows why the wall works. The first person to scale over and get on the US side takes about a minute. He starts to run. A Border Patrol vehicle shows up at 40 seconds on the video and the second person decides not to go over. So, one guy got over the wall instead of a bunch running across with no barrier. The fact that the wall includes ground sensors that alert BP agents to the crossing meant that they showed up PDQ and probably caught the one guy making it across.
In addition, it required that those trying acquire a very tall ladder, cross one at a time and that crossing took much more time and potential risk of being caught.

What's a joke is idiots saying that the wall does nothing, is useless, etc. Obviously, even in that video, it was an effective deterrent and greatly slowed the crossing process giving the BP more time to respond and fewer people getting across. Is it 100% effective? No. Is it effective? Yes.

I mean, I guess we could lay in a mile deep minefield, if they want maximum effectiveness?
