  • President spends 36 million on lawsuits to keep secrets

When will congress go after this guy?

    WASHINGTON
-- The Obama administration in its final year in office spent a record $36.2 million on legal costs defending its refusal to turn over federal records under the Freedom of Information Act, according to an Associated Press analysis of new U.S. data that also showed poor performance in other categories measuring transparency in government.
For a second consecutive year, the Obama administration set a record for times federal employees told citizens, journalists and others that despite searching they couldn’t find a single page of files that were requested.

And it set records for outright denial of access to files, refusing to quickly consider requests described as especially newsworthy, and forcing people to pay for records who had asked the government to waive search and copy fees.

    Abuse of power?
    You be the judge
In courtrooms, the number of lawsuits filed by news organizations under the Freedom of Information Act surged during the past four years, led by the New York Times, Center for Public Integrity and The Associated Press, according to a litigation study by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. The AP on Monday settled its 2015 lawsuit against the State Department for files about Hillary Clinton’s time as secretary of state, at AP’s request, and received $150,546 from the department to cover part of its legal fees.

The AP has pending lawsuits against the FBI for records about its decision to impersonate an AP journalist during a criminal investigation and about who helped the FBI hack into a mass shooting suspect’s iPhone and how much the government paid to do it.

Dunno why you are bothering with this stuff. You left the rule of law a couple of decades ago and are in the rule of partisanship. Nobody but the silent majority cares about the issues , the rest care about scoring points as if this was a game.

Yay! I'm loving that the most powerful country on the planet is run by an imbecile, and had heen for 50 plus years. Football team where the winner gets to **** up the world. Goteam!

Thanks! I love good joke in the morning! Especially in the very real shadow of the National Socialist Democratic Party of America.

If you fear Trump, you should stay indoors at all times in case the sky falls or you get trampled by Chicken Little.

And it's the Democrats letting in the South Americas, not Trump. At least get your facts straight.

Because republicans held the line on defeits and did not allow 1 trillion stimulus packages to be injected into the economy.

Particularly ones that did nothing to stimulate the economy. I know the Obama ones in Arizona were about 90% a waste of taxpayer dollars and nothing else.

But Trump is wasting 1 trillion dollars right now. Imagine if Obama had been able to do the same. Economy would of ramped up even more under him.

Wish I had posted an article I read a few weeks back that discussed this issue. Basic gist was our economy is where the Japanese economy is now. Permanent bad economy without govt easing and spending. Granted Trump has screwed up a lot of the economy with his trade wars so as with anything complicated tough to know what is responsible for what. They discussed how the fed should be raising interest rates but it cant because Trump economy is based on easy money. Which is why when we tried to raise rates economy started to slow.

Actually, the problem with interest rates and the Fed is that if you raise them two things happen: Inflation starts rising proportionally and the amount of interest paid on the federal debt increases.

The first isn't necessarily a bad thing if the inflation rate stays low. Yes, it can slow economic growth, but that too isn't always a bad thing. The second is a very bad thing. A 1% increase in interest on the roughly 23 trillion owed means an increase of tens of billions annually on the interest paid on that debt.

The problem at the federal level is really Congress's fault over decades. Yes, president after president signed off on the spending and such but Congress is the one that made spending on about 60 to 70% of the federal budget mandatory, and most of that spending is on social-welfare programs. That means there isn't much left to trim spending from other than military programs.
The same thing happened in Europe where social-welfare programs can't be cut so they cut military spending to the bone relying instead on the US to provide that. Well, the US doesn't have anyone to rely on in that area so...
