  • Macron Stands up to Trump...

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world...cid=spartandhp

A once-cordial relationship between President Trump and President Emmanuel Macron of France devolved in a dramatic fashion on Tuesday, as the two leaders publicly sparred over their approach to containing the threat of terrorism and a shared vision for the future of NATO, a 70-year-old alliance facing existential threats on multiple fronts.

In a lengthy appearance before reporters, the president met a cool reception from Mr. Macron, whom earlier in the day Mr. Trump had derided as “very insulting” for his recent remarks on the “brain death” of the alliance. When asked to address his earlier comments on the French leader, Mr. Trump, a leader averse to face-to-face confrontation, initially demurred, but Mr. Macron was direct.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.

I've been watching the comment sections on two of the larger medias in France.....and there isn't much love for Macron there. Most people are saying he's looking for other things rather than domestic issues, as he's pretty much made a mess of everything.
You'll live, only the best get killed.

What's Trump whining about? Classic pot - kettle.

Coming from the man who called NATO "obsolete" (and the usual here fully agreeing).

Go figure : Trump retracted his claim that NATO is obsolete in april 2017 (and the usual here now keeping very quiet).

I'm sure the quivering mound of Marcon scared Trump...

Meanwhile, the Belgian federal government has agreed to increase its contribution to NATO budget, from 1.95 % to 2.10 %, to a total of 3.5 million.

3.5 million? That's a line item in the us NATO contribution.

But point taken about relative size.

This is not the "2%" often discussed here, it's 2% of the NATO budget for pens and envelopes, and other small expenses.

If we spent 2% of our GNP, that would amount to 10 billion a year or so, we'd have to keep an aircraft carrier on the Schelde, or colonize the Congo again

But the point is indeed that those percentages mean nothing if the "sample" is small enough….

Do note that Belgium at 0.9 of GNP on defence or so, contributes MORE to NATO in absolute terms than most other small members do at higher percentages of GNP, even discounting operational employability.

We just have a high GNP for our size.

Edit, for comparison, the contract for a few dozen F35s to replace the aging F16s amounts to 34 billion $.

But to have new US president here begging for small change every 5 years or so gets tiresome, go bugger the Germans will you (although rearming Germany may cause problems in itself, not sure you'd want to do that….) ,

it was after all not us that started the Cold War, was it

Great! I am glad he is standing up to Trump, does he now have the guts to stand up to Putin?

What is France's secret alliance with Iran?

I suspect he reads the ACG, I was hardly done typing or he was on the plane back home.

Good, we'll see him at NATOs 80th birthday
