  • Why you have an AMA: the career of 'Doctor" John Roumulus Brinkley...

    John Romulus Brinkley
    (later

    John Richard Brinkley
    ; July 8, 1885 – May 26, 1942) was an American who fraudulently claimed to be a

    medical doctor
(he had no legitimate medical education and bought his medical degree from a "

    diploma mill
") who became known as the "goat-gland doctor" after he achieved national fame, international notoriety and great wealth through the

    xenotransplantation
    of

    goat
testicles into humans. Although initially Brinkley promoted this procedure as a means of curing

    male impotence
, eventually he claimed that the technique was a virtual

    panacea
for a wide range of male ailments. He operated clinics and hospitals in several states, and despite the fact that almost from the beginning, detractors and critics in the medical community thoroughly discredited his methods, he was able to continue his activities for almost two decades.

I suppose the question isn't why have an AMA but why physicians are not certified by a government agency. Licencing is done by the States. Currently the American Board of Medical Specialties is the leading certification organization. The AMA is a professional organization that indirectly controls licencing and certification.

The process for licensing is in need of updating. As new educational processes emerge a switch to more rigorous testing and less demand for diploma based qualification could meet the growing need for doctors. That is not to say that hands on training is not necessary but that steps to reduce the cost of education are needed.

Brinkley got his license to practise by taking 'temporarily' licensed provisional licenses in states that allowed them while your records and Bona fides were being verified - then using them to hop[ scotch to a
state that- Biingo- in Kansas gave him a permanent license based on another state ( Connecticut in this case)

That kind of thing happens today -- and it has nothing to do with the AMA. For example, if a physician is . . . . asked to leave his place of employment in one state, he can simply seek employment in another state, and the new prospective employer can ask the former employer 'most anything he wants, but most HR depts will only confirm dates and terms of employment and nothing else -- including suspicion of criminal activity. Such was the case of a male RN in NJ, who was believed to have administered lethal doses of muscle relaxants to elderly patients. When he felt himself getting vulnerable, said male RN moved to PA, and his new employer was not told of his old employer's suspicions, so he went on to kill more patients in PA.

I was just clarifying who did what.

I assumed you were implying that the AMA safeguards us against charlatans? That may be true, it's a bit complicated however.

JOHN BINKLEY ACTUALLY WON the 1930 Kansas election - between 30-50,000 OF his write in ballots were disallowed on a 'technicality'- announced three days before the election as a 'rule change'.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930_K...orial_election

Which has some bearing on how we vote today......

Therefore, he could not have the various malpractice suits against him disallowed- and his Medical License re- instated.

\Brinkley illustrates the power of a new media to overwhelm an unprepared populace.

In 1930- it was his radio
\broadcasting network - and barnstorming the State by aeroplane.
Interestingly- although Harry Woodring gained less than 2% of the vote shift in 1930- THE dominant Republican voters flocked to - \Brinkley.

In1930, in Kansas, all that stood between a charlatan, con man, and technically, murderer by malpractice 'fake doctor' from becoming the State Governor was the technically illegal action of the state attorney General. who had to secretly to destroy up to 50.000 of \Brinkley's write in ballots.

Since the majority of the forum is probably republican to some degree, - the sobering reality is that the ballots that Brinkley received were almost entirely gulled or disaffected- Republicans. a review of the movie NUTS ishere:

Yes we knew what you were up to. Why don't you go ahead and hope that North Korea starts firing missiles over Japan, that China continues to threaten it's neighbors and disrupt the global economy, that Russia take the rest of the Ukrainian, that Western Europe continues to allow their defences to deteriorate, that the stock market collapse, that we have a recession, that minority employment returns to the norm, that our cities be torn apart by racial tensions, what exactly is it you wouldn't accept to satisfy your hatred.

I could accomplish all of the above:

Today the goat gland testicular transplants only exist in your imagination.

As yourself if you believed the ridiculous Trump-Russia conspiracy hoax and if you did do you really think your mental health shouldn't be questioned.
