  • Marie Jovanovich Testified Before Congress Today

Good for her. She got the slimy end of the stick because of Giuliani and other corruption in the Trump administration.

President Trump for more than a year had pressured the State Department to remove the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, the envoy told lawmakers in closed-door testimony that Democrats demanded as part of their rapidly expanding impeachment inquiry.

Commenting for the first time on what she called a “concerted campaign” against her, Marie Yovanovitch, whom Mr. Trump removed from her post in May, said she didn’t know why she was targeted by Trump allies outside the administration, including his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani.

But she said she suspected it was because of two Giuliani associates who stood to benefit financially by sidetracking an ambassador who had spoken out against corruption in Ukraine.

The testimony of the ambassador could help Democrats draw a clearer connection to the pressure campaign by Mr. Trump in his July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which led to a CIA whistleblower complaint and in turn sparked the impeachment query.

She came up in that July call, with Mr. Trump calling her “bad news” and telling his Ukrainian counterpart that “she’s going to go through some things,” according to a rough transcript released by the White House.

We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.
