  • Trump Tariffs Crumble Asian Markets, Crack Yuan

Looks like Trump's plan brought them back to the table:

"China called last night our top trade people and said ‘let’s get back to the table’ so we will be getting back to the table and I think they want to do something," Trump said. "They have been hurt very badly but they understand this is the right thing to do and I have great respect for it. This is a very positive development for the world."I think we are going to have a deal,” Trump added.

China's public conciliatory signals came after Asian markets cracked Monday and its currency plummeted to an 11-year low. The market and currency rout came after the United States imposed tariffs on $550 billion in Chinese exports Friday.

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He also said that his country is opposed to escalation of the trade conflict, which threatens to push the world economy into a recession and has caused anxiety across world capitals.

Speaking at a tech conference in Chongqing, Liu said, “We are willing to resolve the issue through consultations and cooperation in a calm attitude and resolutely oppose the escalation of the trade war.” Liu has led the trade negotiations with Washington and is Chinese President Xi Jinping's top economic adviser.

Maybe, just maybe, this means that taking a hardline might work out.

I hope it all works out, but it would seem Trump's tactics are putting pressure on the Chinese.

Why didn't Biden do this? Communist sympathy? Where are our "Allies"? Why did the media focus on Russia when Communist China is the real threat? Is it racism that causes the Democratic party to ignore the Chinese threat to Vietnam, India, Japan, South Korea, Philippines and the rest of Asia. Why are liberals only concerned about Brown and Black people and not yellow people? Why do liberal educational institutions discriminate against Asians?

You've hit upon one of the great hypocrisy's of the left.
Asians are identified as minorities and people of color, be the left happily discriminates against them.

china is no longer communist. It is now a self perpetuating Timo-oligarchy based on get rich quick families and illicit connections.

somewhere in Communist heaven Karl Marx is saying,

__Ach! I told you so. True communism can only be established when the working class revolts against an industrialized mature Capitalist lumpen class!!_

I'm more willing to wait and see what actually happens as opposed to an unsubstantiated claim from one of the participants.
Chinese state media is still being rather bellicose:
                    https://globalnews.ca/news/5813360/c...ade-war-trump/
Chinese state media on Monday blasted the United States.

The official China Daily said in an editorial that Washington would “never be allowed to control China’s fate”.

“It has become unquestionably clear that his administration’s tariff war against China is politically motivated. What Washington wants from its largest trade partner is for it to be content to play second fiddle and meekly do as it demands,” the English-language paper wrote in an editorial.

“Washington has again taken the initiative to escalate the fight in the hope that Beijing will throw in the sponge as early as possible. But Beijing regards the trade war as an unavoidable trial by fire, from which the country will emerge stronger.”
As well there is a significant faction of the Chinese government centred around the military that is willing to play hard ball. The military plays a huge role in the economy of China as many leading Chinese companies are military owned or controlled. I worked with the largest condiment company in China as a consultant. It was founded by the PLA and still had significant Army character. Companies are used as a slush fund by the PLA to fund programs off the books, as a retirement plan (ex army officers get cushy gigs on board and as managers. Also luxury cars and vehicles etc).

                    https://www.npr.org/2019/08/26/75314...r-of-attrition

                    From the BBC:
                    https://www.bbc.com/news/business-49471713

In Beijing, foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said he had not heard that talks were about to re-start.

But he said: "We strongly urge the US not to miscalculate the situation and immediately cease its wrong actions. If the US implements its plan of raising tariffs, China will definitely continue to take measures and safeguard its own legitimate rights. China does not accept any threats or intimidation."
So right now I'm going to wait to see what the Chinese actually do, not what the President claims they're going to do.
Historically they've been willing to put up with a lot of discomfort to avoid appearing weak to a foreign power and there is a lot of hostility towards America among the general population. The economy and the way business runs is strongly connected to China's history with Western nations (not a good one) and the fact that while Western companies tend to go no further than a detailed 5 year plan with further long term planning as very vague, Chinese companies have 10, 15, 20 year detailed plans and are willing to take yearly losses that Western companies and their share holders would balk at.

It's a different model than how the West functions so to expect them to respond the same is mistaken.

Do you have a problem with that? Same goes for every other country but...in the real world it doesn't work that well, no clear lines.

Like it or not China is growing, why not? A country with the largest population and a history full of culture and advancement in may fields of medicine, seiciene, art and and and and.

Without a devastating World War, which none can win, China is going to be the World leader with in 100 years, like it or not.
