  • G-7 Summit Does Not Look Good

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world...cid=spartandhp

    'The Group of Seven (
    G-7
) summit is set to end without a joint communique for the first time in its 44-year history, after French President Emmanuel Macron decided to abandon the tradition citing "a very deep crisis of democracy."'

'It will be the first time since meetings began in 1975 that the forum has failed to end a summit without an agreed statement, laying bare the deepening rift between heads of state from seven of the world's largest economies.'

'Speaking to reporters ahead of the G-7 meeting at a news conference in Paris on Wednesday, Macron said an attempt to produce a joint communique would most likely be a "pointless" exercise.'

'He referenced President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from a landmark climate agreement restricting global efforts to cut carbon as one example of why it would be difficult to display a united front.'

'The annual summit brings together the leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States. It will be held in the seaside town of Biarritz in southwest France from Saturday through to Monday.'

'Securing an agreement at the annual summit has proved increasingly difficult in recent years, partly because the U.S. president has expressed a preference for bilateral trade pacts over multilateral agreements.'

'"It is impossible to predict what the U.S. will do — we might be in for some surprises from Trump," Agathe Demarais, global forecasting director at the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), told CNBC via telephone.'

'"I'm not sure what he is going to do, maybe Trump doesn't know either," Demarais said, citing the U.S. as a notable exception in its approach to handling disputes.'

The G7 group of world leaders is likely to discuss at its meeting this weekend whether to readmit Russia, a senior Trump administration official said on Thursday, but a vote on the issue was unlikely because the group works on a consensus basis.

'U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday voiced support for Russia rejoining the group, making it the G8, and suggested there would be a vote to decide.'

'The official noted that Russia had not formally requested to be re-admitted to the group. The official said that would be necessary for any such move to take place.'

'Trump will hold individual meetings with the leaders of Britain, France, Germany, India and Canada during his trip to France officials said.'

        This ought to be interesting:

'As President Trump departs for France to represent the U.S. at the G-7 summit of world leaders, the memories of the insults he has leveled against key U.S. allies will still be fresh, and he'll be interacting with some of those same leaders over the next few days.

Apparently, Trump didn't even want to attend the conference:

          https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world...cid=spartandhp

          'As the
          global economy
shudders, the Middle East boils and the
          Amazon rainforest burns
, world leaders are convening on France's Atlantic coast for a weekend of talks few believe can solve any of it.'

'President Donald Trump arrived in France Saturday morning after an overnight flight from Washington, his arrival preceded by more tit-for-tat tariff action that economists -- and most of the other Group of 7 heads -- believe is contributing to a global economic slump.'

'He's due to attend a dinner for the leaders Saturday evening at the base of a tall white lighthouse planted atop a rocky cliff overlooking elegant Biarritz, the venue for this year's summit. Formal talks begin Sunday morning.'

'World leaders have plenty to discuss. Festering foreign policy matters like Iran and fresh tensions between India and Pakistan are on the table. The summit's host, French President Emmanuel Macron, says he also wants to address raging wildfires in the Amazon rainforest.'

'Heading into the summit, however, the flagging global economy appeared the most pressing matter. Trump insisted on a special Sunday morning session to discuss it. Other leaders blame his use of tariffs -- on friends and foe alike -- for weighing down growth, causing manufacturing to contract and throwing equity markets into turmoil.'

White House aides are unhappy over the G7 agenda, especially because it is concentrating on climate change:

            https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world...cid=spartandhp

'President Donald Trump publicly lavished praise on French President Emmanuel Macron, even as his aides fumed over France's handling of the G7 Summit, according to multiple reports. '

'Though Trump boasted of his and Macron's "special relationship" during a private lunch at the start of the summit, his aides reportedly believe that the French organized the event in such a way as to antagonize the United States by focusing on "niche issues" at the expense of economic ones.'

'Bloomberg News reported that US officials have privately accused Macron of trying to isolate Trump by focusing much of the discussions on climate change, a topic over which Trump is at odds with his fellow world leaders.'

'The New York Times similarly reported that senior administration officials believe that Macron was appeasing his domestic audience by focusing on climate change, income and gender equality, and African development.'

'President Donald Trump denied reports Sunday of tension among world leaders at the G-7 summit in southwest France, insisting that he was having “good meetings” and that everyone was getting along well.'

'“From the moment we got here, we’ve been treated beautifully,” he said during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.'

'But behind the scenes, there were signs of discord.'

'Trump aides complained to reporters that French President Emmanuel Macron had arranged the agenda to focus on issues such as climate change that would play well in his home country and make Trump look bad, given Trump’s decision to pull the U.S. out of an international climate accord.'

Who are now perfectly aware the present US admin prefers autocrats.

Clearly there's just something about all that power accountable to no one that resonates with the US prez in ways that the role of accountable leaders of representative democracies do not.

There maybe a joint communique yet, Trump so far has kept his mouth shut, and the 6 others all agree that was a great idea
