  • Duncan Hunters wife pleads guilty to corruption charge; faces up to 5 years in prison

The accusations are the kinds of things most people could not do, because they would not be able to sleep at night. Hunters wife is said to have used campaign fiance funds for lavish spending on Hotels and Vacations that her husband Duncan was on with her. And Duncan Hunter appeared on Fox saying he didnt do anything but his wife will be looked at. Came off as a weak showing by Mr Hunter IMO.

The wife of Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., faces up to five years in prison after pleading guilty on Thursday in federal court to one count of corruption in a case that has cast a shadow over the congressmanís career.

Margaret Hunter and her husband are accused of spending $250,000 for golf outings, trips to Italy and Hawaii, school tuition, theater tickets and other expenses between 2009 and 2016. Both were indicted on 60 criminal counts related to the misuse of campaign funds and trying to conceal illegal spending.

The congressmanís wife had originally pleaded not guilty to the charges, but it was reported Wednesday that she had decided to change her plea at the last minute.

Well, gee whiz...60 counts and only convicted on only one for which she will do real time two years or less in Club Fed. Some deterrent.

How do you think the Feds maintain a 97% conviction rate?
Scare 'em to death with the "we have the power to destroy you no matter what you say!" and hang a hundred charges over their head.... and the only way out is to implicate someone else.

Exorcist what are you going on about The Feds? We are not North Korea This is America. We have one of the fairest criminal justice systems around. And Mrs Hunter plead guilty, she plead that she is a thief, possibly stole from wounded warriors project as well..there is nothing to defend here. Thats the difference between Mrs Hunter and Clinton and Trump whom some say should be jailed, Mrs Hunter plead guilty the others deny the wrongdoings and have not been charged.

Mr and Mrs Hunter gained from illegal use of campaign finance funds. While they will try and shake the hands of fellow Americans with a fake smile...they really want to get as rich as possible and they dont care about stealing from charities to do so. Its as bad as it gets, to steal that is.

In the Fox interview Mr Hunter was complaining about his 175k a year salary, he was pretty much saying if anything its his wife fault for the campaign finance issues. There is nothing to defend here. One can defend Clinton or Trump because they are not being charged, this is as clear cut as it gets Mrs Hunter plead guilty.

Looks like the Democrats will gain another House seat in CA when they succeed in getting rid of Rep Duncan Hunter. They got his wife to plead guilty to 1 out of 60 counts for leniency in exchange for her testimony against her husband.

Duncan Hunter has insisted from the beginning that this is a witch hunt. He claimed two assistant U.S. attorneys on his case attended a fundraising event for then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton while he and his wife was being investigated. He put himself in this terrible predicament, he have no one to blame but himself. Democrats have been trying to get his seat for years. He won re-election last year despite the indictment.

Actually, I agree with Exo. The federal prosecutor's offices are more like persecutors. They won't accept anything but a guilty plea. Their typical MO is telling a defendant if they go to trial it'll bankrupt them and they'll get 20 + years if convicted. Then they offer the plea deal and the defendant usually takes that to get a light sentence. The prosecutor gets a conviction and has a near 100% conviction rate that looks good on their resume, while the defendant gets railroaded into prison with no ability to appeal the conviction (that's standard as part of the plea deal).
If you fight them, they run you out of money. They'll stonewall evidence and use quack "experts" when necessary against you.

It isn't about justice, it's about a good conviction rate...

Any and all Republicans should get the hell out of CA while they still can afford to do so, before their assets are seized.

And isn't it amazing, how the Left suddenly clammed up about the issue of how many Americans are in prison compared to the rest of the world?

What was it, double the rate for China?

This is America, a person is innocent until proven guilty.

Now you are claiming that Mr. Hunter is guilty of illegal use of campaign funds...... How did you come to this conclusion...as an American?

I thought one cannot testify against a spouse in America.

I understand that a person is innocent until proven guilty...The problem is this,

Margaret Hunter and her husband are accused of spending $250,000 for golf outings, trips to Italy and Hawaii, school tuition, theater tickets and other expenses between 2009 and 2016. The fact alone that Mr Hunter was indicted was a problem. This is the USA, you dont just get indicted that is a serious thing. And 2nd, Mr Hunter came off as weak in the fox interview, basically putting the blame on his wife. Mrs Hunter already plead guilty. Do you really think her husband was scot free? How can you type your above post as an American?
