    No.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.

              Absolutely!

Every single person that the U.S. government held as a slave should be compensated for that injustice. Should their descendants, NO.

What all white men answer so far ?

I don’t think I am for Reperations To former slaves as it might be tough to trace the descendants. What is for sure is that being black in early United States of America was not the same as being black in the various liberal Catholic kingdoms and in the Roman empire of history. Skin color did not gain importance until the 17th or 18th century it seems. Certainly the Roman Empire was Arab, African and European in its ranks. The Middle Ages in Europe saw blacks depicted as honorable and dignified in various paintings

Afaict the problem by NOW isn't really any direct long-term effects of slavery.

THIS kind of thing seems to be. Fixing seems like something more acute to tackle:

Average wealth for white families is seven times higher than average wealth for black families.
That requires a somewhat coherent "family" able to transfer wealth from one generation to the next.

I suspect someone will be along soon to talk about unmarried mothers and absent fathers.

I recall one of the German 1920's anthropologists observing that the rate of US black illegitimate children back then was in fact lower than that of his Catholic Bavarian countrymen...

Of course it will be trotted out how in America everyone who isn't privileged only have themselves to blame. Wouldn't be the US otherwise...

No compensation for slavery as too long ago. There is however a case for compensation for segregation and denial of voting rights.

In fact - one could argue that the descendants at least, of the slaves taken to the US are in fact better off than the descendants their kin that remained in Africa.

                            Maybe they should pay

there are a lot of blacks in America that have no relationship to our slavery. People from Haiti and Ethiopia both come to mind. How would it be decided on who has he rights to claim? Proof please. Just being black well not cut it.
